Okay, I don't know all the facts, so feel free to enlighten me, but the reason he's considered a cheating bastard instead of a guy suffering from some kind of severe Stockholm Syndrome in love with his rapist is....?

I dunno. Jean later made them have sex on her grave, so she pretty much approved of them as a couple (it's fucked up- Scott's not a telepath and Emma and Jean are phenomenally powerful in that regard so any control over or consent in a telepathic counseling session or telepathic pushes is extremely dubious). However, in canon, the pairing is severely disapproved of and Emma Frost is considered a power-grabbing skank by many, so.

Why? If you flipped the genders, it would be called rape. Emma Frost is a massively powerful telepath. Scott went to her for counseling. She started a mentally sexual situation with a man who wasn't mentally capable of complete consent. She took advantage of him.

I'm just going to repost what someone else said on the subject

In real life, Emma might lose her license--if she actually has one--and Scott could sue her for malpractice. She wouldn't be charged with rape, sexual assault or anything else criminal. Therapy patients are perfectly able to legally consent, unless they're underage or mentally incompetent. There's a nasty power differential and lots of trust issues, but it's still a relationship between free adults.

Besides that, these two were hardly in a formal therapist-client relationship. Arguably the whole "therapy" thing was mostly a roleplay to soothe Scott's conscience about their constant flirting. He certainly isn't stupid enough to think that Emma Frost, who...

a) is a famously deceptive and manipulative ex-supervillain who tends to Solve All Problems With Sex

b) hates and is hated by his wife, and once fought her to near death

c) has been coming on to him like crazy for the past few weeks

...is an ideal person to come to for safe, impartial, boundary-respecting marital counselling.


I mean, this is pretty much like telling your hot friend that your tense groin muscles are a severe medical problem and your wife just can't seem to relieve them, and then they show up in an erotic nurse outfit with rubber gloves on and tell you that they're a licensed physician and you need to disrobe for examination. You don't really get to claim malpractice if that inexplicably turns into sex at some point.
