Dude, does anyone want to try to name for me the last time they liked Cyclops? I've always had a bizarre soft spot for him, like I really wanted to like him, but it was often just too difficult.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess during the X-men First Class comics. He was great in those.

And, uh, I sort of liked him during the beginning of Ultimate X-men (despite how much the series sucked over all). I didn't read a bunch of issues though.

The first class comics were KICK ASS.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure if this counts, but I found him much more tolerable in the movies than the comics or the cartoon. Although that probably had something to do with James Marsden.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-10-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked him back when I read the comics, which was in the 90s. I don't recall any stand out stories focusing on him or anything but I do recall liking him. So I don't know.

Before he cheated on his wife with a whore?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I realized belatedly that that was bad wording. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Emma mentally raped him and then he fell in love with her?

IIRC, his wife mentally raped him so he'd go with Emma. Or something. I know Jean had something to do with it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think so. I'm pretty sure Emma raped him during a counseling session.

I loved Cyclops when I was a kid, but I think that had more to do with the cartoons than comics... I remember reading the comics, but I'm kind of fuzzy on him in them (mostly because I had to borrow them from the boys in my class, and they were all in love with Wolverine so if it wasn't Wolverine-centric they didn't put it in their trapper-keepers).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought he was uninteresting, and a bit of a dork. I didn't like him, as such, but I didn't dislike him either. Even when he cheated on Jean and then made out with Emma on her grave I was pretty meh.

I didn't start actively disliking him until Matt Fraction put him through his patented Fraction Douchebaggifier (tm), and then made him one of the most prominent characters in the series, so his newfound douchery was unavoidable.

I'm taking this phrase, thank ye

Fraction Douchebaggifier (tm)

YAAAASSSSS. I'm just waiting on Hawkeye to go like this after the first six issues.

1602?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Related question - when was the last time a writer did anything compelling with his autism?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
He has autism? Since when? That's a serious question. My X-Men readings have very big gaps all over the place.

... moments during Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men. That's the last solid time I think I really liked Scott.

I'm a forever fan. >:c

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Not since X-Factor #1, the old series. You know, the one where he leaves his wife and infant child to see if his old fling might be alive again? Without even telling his wife? Because he and her just had a fight about how Scott needs to be more interested in his family than the X-Men? Because he chose to retire?

No, no, fuck you, Summers. That's one of the shittiest things I've ever seen a hero do.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That people still insist he's some paragon of virtue will forever baffle me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
First season of X-men: TAS. Other than that, no. And I don't get how anyone could root for him in the AvsX storyline. Not to say that Cap wasn't an asshole, because he was.
