Are ... are we even all talking about the same anime? It was refreshing that they went the extra step and that their love was written just as plain romance. But it panders so heavily to BL fans and it utilises so many of the tropes, having Nezumi being controlling and horrible and Shion so naive and obsessively loving Nezumi no matter what he does or says. Calling it a gay romance proper always feels like pushing it to me ... but yeah at least they went there? Even if it was for BL fans instead of a wide audience?

to be fair, a lot of het manga/anime do the whole "Seemingly cold and rude man attracts perky love interest who won't give up on him" thing too

yes, there were tropes, there are ALWAYS tropes everywhere in anime (see: tiger & bunny, kuroko no basuke, durarara!!), but it wasn't ever marketed towards BL fans. are BL fans going to take over and enjoy a series that has a m/m overtones/undertones/romance? yeah, you bet. but it was marketed as science fiction and played out like your run of the mill dystopian series, so hordes of fanboys started watching it and then dropping it as soon as they realized the gay was there to stay, leaving mostly the BL fans who stuck it out and people who, you know, actually cared about seeing the series to its end.

i loved the subversion so much. yeah, nezumi was controlling and violent and literally a street rat but he also spent entire nights in dresses and full make-up reciting shakespeare...
