As a gay man, I did a little fistpump of joy when I saw this anime. I wish there were more series like it too, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I loved this anime. And when I read the actual novel it was even better... Now all I'm waiting for is the manga to end

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I really need to watch this again. It had such a wonderfully not-yaoi romantic plot and I loved the story too.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It was so nice seeing them living their lives and dealing with the plot instead of letting the affection take over the story. I really REALLY like that the part of that affection that gets emphasis is how hard they fell for each other and not that they fell for OMG!a guy!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not just western shows though. No6 is still an exception in anime too...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the anime has some flaws - mainly, I think it was way too short, and I would've liked the plot explored more simply because it was such an interesting premise. But still, I fucking love this show, and I love it for what plot it has and the atmosphere - to me, making the two guys canon was just a perk, even though I think that's what No. 6 should be most proud of. As another gay person, as much as I love yaoi, it was amazing to see a.. non-yaoi story feature gay characters. And Shion and Rat were so adorable/angsty/wonderful, dancing scene, amirite...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
you do realize that it was just pandering to the fangirls and objectifying homosexuals, right?

if not, brb laughing at you really hard.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
so is EVERY gay pairing just objectifying homosexuals to you...?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
nope. try harder next time.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)

oh fuck it, you troll.

nope-- this show wasn't even marketed as BL. It was presented as a sci-fi show... that's it. Which makes the gay angle even more impressive-- they didn't use it to sell the series to fangirls OR to warn those with more ~delicate~ sensibilities to stay away.

Are ... are we even all talking about the same anime? It was refreshing that they went the extra step and that their love was written just as plain romance. But it panders so heavily to BL fans and it utilises so many of the tropes, having Nezumi being controlling and horrible and Shion so naive and obsessively loving Nezumi no matter what he does or says. Calling it a gay romance proper always feels like pushing it to me ... but yeah at least they went there? Even if it was for BL fans instead of a wide audience?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
to be fair, a lot of het manga/anime do the whole "Seemingly cold and rude man attracts perky love interest who won't give up on him" thing too

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
yes, there were tropes, there are ALWAYS tropes everywhere in anime (see: tiger & bunny, kuroko no basuke, durarara!!), but it wasn't ever marketed towards BL fans. are BL fans going to take over and enjoy a series that has a m/m overtones/undertones/romance? yeah, you bet. but it was marketed as science fiction and played out like your run of the mill dystopian series, so hordes of fanboys started watching it and then dropping it as soon as they realized the gay was there to stay, leaving mostly the BL fans who stuck it out and people who, you know, actually cared about seeing the series to its end.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
They still subverted certain tropes, because Shion threw back some punches; he wasn't a shrinking violet.

No. 6 is trashy panderbait anime for fujoshi. If you want a thoughtful look at homosexuality at least watch Aoi Hana.

Yessss, it's great to see same-sex relationships treated seriously and as a major aspect of the series without it being the whole plot. *w* I prefer the manga adaptation to the anime, though, I feel like it worked better.

and if anyone's looking for another series with similar themes I recommend Ciel: The Last Autumn Story /shameless plug

Mmmhhh No. 6. Yeah, I agree that the romance and overall relationship was treated as an every day thing instead of going "LOOK LOOK YAOI LOOK!!!!!111"

And I will forever ignore the ending because shush. I liked the fans ending better.

i've said this to a few people before but despite this series being far from perfect in so many ways (yes, the anime ended in chaos and the storytelling kind of became a bit of a trainwreck), it had probably one of the rare few takes on same-sex relationships in the media, both eastern and western, that i appreciated. i haven't read the manga or the novels but, from what i've heard, it was toned down even further for the anime. even still, i think what asano atsuko managed to do with keeping the focus on the bigger picture and tackle this relationship without making it feel like some big social statement was really impressive and admirable. they were just two people with their own separate stories who also happened to be attracted to each other (against their better judgment). they fought and made up and enjoyed each other's company without any epic gay freakout or playing it for gags or putting on a show for the audience or anything. there was really nothing about their relationship that would make anyone point and scream FANSERVICE if it weren't for the fact that they were both dudes. also, they didn't really get a proper fluffy happy ending either and i'm pretty sure that's "doing it wrong" if your intending to go the fanbait pandering route :)

basically, every time i come across something where someone talks of tv shows/movies queerbaiting the crap out everyone with all this ust and subtext and rad "bromances" it's a little bit comforting and validating to remember that yeah, at least, no. 6 happened!

(also, i can't even get started about eve and inukashi--i mean, how many other series have incorporated a gender neutral character that expertly?--and all the other awesome unconventional things this series did well. so yes, it had its flaws, but i think it deserves credit where credit's due.)

My rant about gay in anime

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched this anime, so I'm not going to comment on it, but I do really think it's a stretch to say that Japanese shows are more 'brave' to 'show gay relationships'.
The reason that Japanese cartoons are more willing to show homosexual relationships versus Western ones is because Japan doesn't use the Judeo-Christian value system, which believes that any same sex attraction is sinful and horrible, and which is why in the west there's such a large taboo to show any kind of homosexuality in the media.
In Japan, it's a bit different. The visibility of homosexuality in the media isn't really as taboo (Take a class on classic Japanese literature, and you'll see that it's no stranger to homosexual references). Instead most people here just view it as a deviant sexual activity. A lot of people here don't even recognize homosexuality as an actual identity- considering that in Japanese there actually really is no word for 'lesbian' or 'gay'. I think it's getting a lot better with the younger generation, but acceptance of gay people still has a very far ways to go.
I would also mention that BL has actually had a positive influence on gay acceptance in Japan, but only for a small group of its niche female readership.
As a lesbian living currently in Japan, I find the acceptance and development of gay rights FAR more advanced in the West. Trust me, Japan can keep occasionally showing gay in their anime, but it will be no indicator of the measure of gay rights the country has.

Hey if it's an anime that has an actual canon, sensitive representation of a homosexual relationship I'm all for it. Maybe I'll go check this one out.

I really got into the tv show hex because of Thelma and Cassie's relationship, though it's technically a friendship I think there was a lot of love between them regardless.

Yeah it was a great lil' anime =')

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I...uh, rather strongly disliked this show. But I agree with every other word of your secret.
I appreciated the Nezumi x Sion relationship. I think that may be the first time I've seen a canon male gay couple in a non-yaoi anime. They aren't swept off to the side, they aren't villains, they are the main characters. They are treated with respect and their romantic feelings are given a fair amount of screen time and exploration. (While at the same time, it's not the whole point of the story either.) There is great value in that, and I hope it's a precedent being set for other series to try.
