i've said this to a few people before but despite this series being far from perfect in so many ways (yes, the anime ended in chaos and the storytelling kind of became a bit of a trainwreck), it had probably one of the rare few takes on same-sex relationships in the media, both eastern and western, that i appreciated. i haven't read the manga or the novels but, from what i've heard, it was toned down even further for the anime. even still, i think what asano atsuko managed to do with keeping the focus on the bigger picture and tackle this relationship without making it feel like some big social statement was really impressive and admirable. they were just two people with their own separate stories who also happened to be attracted to each other (against their better judgment). they fought and made up and enjoyed each other's company without any epic gay freakout or playing it for gags or putting on a show for the audience or anything. there was really nothing about their relationship that would make anyone point and scream FANSERVICE if it weren't for the fact that they were both dudes. also, they didn't really get a proper fluffy happy ending either and i'm pretty sure that's "doing it wrong" if your intending to go the fanbait pandering route :)

basically, every time i come across something where someone talks of tv shows/movies queerbaiting the crap out everyone with all this ust and subtext and rad "bromances" it's a little bit comforting and validating to remember that yeah, at least, no. 6 happened!

(also, i can't even get started about eve and inukashi--i mean, how many other series have incorporated a gender neutral character that expertly?--and all the other awesome unconventional things this series did well. so yes, it had its flaws, but i think it deserves credit where credit's due.)
