My rant about gay in anime

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched this anime, so I'm not going to comment on it, but I do really think it's a stretch to say that Japanese shows are more 'brave' to 'show gay relationships'.
The reason that Japanese cartoons are more willing to show homosexual relationships versus Western ones is because Japan doesn't use the Judeo-Christian value system, which believes that any same sex attraction is sinful and horrible, and which is why in the west there's such a large taboo to show any kind of homosexuality in the media.
In Japan, it's a bit different. The visibility of homosexuality in the media isn't really as taboo (Take a class on classic Japanese literature, and you'll see that it's no stranger to homosexual references). Instead most people here just view it as a deviant sexual activity. A lot of people here don't even recognize homosexuality as an actual identity- considering that in Japanese there actually really is no word for 'lesbian' or 'gay'. I think it's getting a lot better with the younger generation, but acceptance of gay people still has a very far ways to go.
I would also mention that BL has actually had a positive influence on gay acceptance in Japan, but only for a small group of its niche female readership.
As a lesbian living currently in Japan, I find the acceptance and development of gay rights FAR more advanced in the West. Trust me, Japan can keep occasionally showing gay in their anime, but it will be no indicator of the measure of gay rights the country has.

Pretty much. One of my best friends, who has lived there for 5 years, has literally been told that gay rights aren't a problem in Japan because "We just don't have gay people here."

You know you just contradicted yourself in that comment. How is West (which doesn't a monolithic view on homosexuality either, btw) calling homosexuality deviant any worse than the Japanese cultural belief that homosexuality is a sexual deviancy?

Both sides are shit with LGB rights, IMO. Japan may a different outlook of sexuality than the West but having a different outlook, especially when it forces you into some sort of invisibility as someone who is LGB, doesn't mean it's not as homophobic.

The West's treatment of homosexuality is improving as well, including a few countries that allow gay marriage and granting full civil rights and the acceptance of LGB folks raising little by little due to young people. There are media that do show LGB visibility. But like anime, they are usually are niche entertainment.

This. The problem in Japan is that being homosexual is seen as a kink, a matter of choice. And I don't see how gay erasure is any better than gay oppression.

nayrt

I'm confused. The anon you replied to did say Japan is less progressive with LGBT rights than the West. Everything you are arguing is perfectly in line with her comment.

Maybe you misread her?

I'm another lesbian in Japan and agree with what you say in the sense that in some areas, Japan is a lot less progressive than the West in gay acceptance but -

in Japanese there actually really is no word for 'lesbian' or 'gay'

yes there is. lol... "gei" and "lezu"/"bian". And before that, doseiaisha.
