I don't follow Teen Wolf/Sterek AT ALL, but I don't think making them canon is a good idea, at least not until the VERY VERY END of the series. Cause let's be honest here, UST is what drives most of shipping. That's why non-canonical pairings (like Sterek) are so much more popular than canonical pairings. That's why slash is popular. That's why yaoi fangirls would obsess over slashing two canonically "straight" characters than characters from an actual BL manga.

Ideally, Teen Wolf could continue the ship teases and keep building it up, getting more and more intense, until the very end of the show (whenever that is) where Sterek finally become canon, giving the fangirls a satisfactory ending and closure.
