Weight question and height

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
TW if you're sensitive about weight issues.

Okay so I am a tiny person, under 5'0". Because I am so diminutive, BMI is a total crapwagon for me.

Does anybody have any kind of reliable predictor (like a calculator, formula, or set of charts) of a healthy weight for people who are outside of the average range of heights/body types/whatever?

I ask because I have a feeling the range of weights they suggest as being appropriate for me are too low.

Interested in this as well! I'm 4'10", apparently my healthy weight is like 45kg... I have a solid build, if I was 45kg I'd be skin and bones. It'd be good actually knowing what's healthy for me!

I'd aim for the higher end of what they recommend. For you that's like what? 115-125?

I'm 2 inches taller and I'd be happen with 130.

Dead on with the range. And thanks for the advice.

I'm not quite 5'2" and built rather...finely? Like my ribcage is pretty small, and my best range seems to be 105-115. My mom is 5'2", slightly wider ribcage, and she's good around 115-125. So it depends on your whole body, really, not just your height. I would honestly tell you to try for what feels good and healthy to you and not worry about averages.

I'm 4'10" and pretty solid. Even at my lowest weight (100-102), when my hipbones were sticking out, ribs were showing, sunken eyes and temples, my measurements were something like 33-26-33.

But thanks for the advice, I'll be mulling on that.

A better way is probably to get callipers and go for a reasonable body fat percentage. Doing measurements online don't give a good idea of BF%, you need callipers.

I've wondered this a lot too - I'm 5" and probably closer to 125-130, but I have a bit of muscle. D:

It depends on what you're looking for. A general indicator that you are healthy? Because a lot of stuff out there doesn't actually use weight in their determinations of whether you are at risk. There are waist-to-hip ratios, there's the BAI (Body Adiposity Index) which has to do with height and hip circumference, plain old waist size, body fat percentage, etc. Maybe you could use the BMI as a general guide of weight range - something to tell you if you are severely underweight or severely overweight - and then use other methods to check to make sure you don't have too much body fat.

Thanks for the input, but I'm leery of BAI as much as I am of BMI. Again, this kind of formula only works for people who are of average build/height, I'm guessing. It doesn't take into account peoples' frame sizes, which is a huge factor in circumference measurements.

Waist to height ratio is like a billion times better, but a little more time-consuming. Everyone knows, really, that BMI is ridiculously unhelpful in anything except the most obvious cases. It doesn't even differentiate between muscle and fat.

Go for waist/height. Once you've done the basic maths, you can even mark up a belt with your healthy range.
