I try to keep up with the show at least enough that I won't be in the dark later on, but I haven't liked it since Moffat took over. A lot of it has to do with Amy, who I can't stand. I can't stand Matt Smith as the Doctor, either. A lot of it also has to do with Moffat's style; I think he was a great script writer for the show when RTD was running it, but he just can't deliver as the showrunner. I have a fantasy in which the BBC replaces him so he can focus on Sherlock. IMHO that would be a win-win situation because Sherlock would be produced and released much faster and DW would have the chance to be good again.

My biggest complaint about the show is "The Ponds". It bothers me in ways most of the people I know in fandom just can't understand. Rory is the only character I like (WTF did they do to River Song? She was awesome when we first met her!). I always thought Rory deserved someone better than Amy. I hate that Moffat, the Doctor, Amy, and the fandom constantly overlook his strengths and view him as a buffoon, and I despise beyond all else the inherent emasculation in calling him Rory Pond and calling Amy Williams Amy Pond. It sickens me. Some women I know have said that this empowers Amy and, by extension, female viewers, but that is not the case at all. Denigrating someone does empower the person doing it; it makes them a bully.

As as Sherlock fan: OH, SWEET JESUS NO.

I realize I may be taking the bait here, but

WHAT. NO. A man taking his wife's name is no more, and no less, denigrating than a woman taking her husband's name. It is a personal choice. And it certainly isn't unfair to the husband for the wife not to take his name.

Now, I don't watch the show. Is it the case that neither of them changed their names, everyone keeps calling him Rory Pond, and he feels dehumanized and embarrassed by people disregarding his preference? Then yes, that's a valid complaint, especially if it's played for laughs. ...Oddly, I don't think I'd sympathize if she did change her name, but everyone keeps using 'Pond'.

Also, I would be thrilled to see 'emasculate' disappear from the language.

She took his name and he's objected to being called Rory Pond. Often when he's called that, both in the show and out of it, it's done derisively.

Oddly, I don't think I'd sympathize if she did change her name, but everyone keeps using 'Pond'. Why the double standard?

'Emascualte' will disappear from the language when it stops happening, the same as 'famine', 'war', and many other despicable things. When women don't need to be empowered, men won't have to be emasculated. It is only when double standards are erased and the sexes are equal that that can happen.

I agree I have a double standard, which is why I said "oddly". I'm not sure why. Maybe because if anyone is changing their name, names must not be that big a deal, so the names could go either way and someone mucking it up isn't an issue? I'm not sure.

From what you said, though, I misread the situation. If people call him by his wife's name specifically to deride him, that's both a generally disrespectful thing to do and implies there is something wrong with a man taking his wife's name.

However, I really don't agree with you about "emasculate". There are other words to describe humiliation, disrespect, removal of agency that do not imply pride, respect, and agency are inherently masculine.

The show and fandom tended to put Rory down a lot in many different ways and I just never liked it. He was the only character on the show I respected, largely because he was the only one who didn't need to put anyone else down to feel better about himself.

Pride, respect, and agency certainly are not inherently masculine, but sometimes they are a part of someone's identity in their chosen gender identity role. In the case of Rory Williams, and in context with specific scenes within the show, the Doctor's use of Rory Pond was intended as emasculating. Behind the scenes, there are specific reasons for this regarding licence fee payer's response to perceived extreme social liberalism on another programme around the same time that Amy and Rory married. The original intent was that Rory would take his wife's name; after some things on another programme, the Beeb thought that a great many viewers who wouldn't have objected otherwise would do so now. So they rewrote it to include a scene in which Amy and Rory talk about it, with the Doctor there as a witness who interjects his opinion.

Just wanted to say also that my original comment wasn't meant as 'bait'. I genuinely dislike the things I stated about the show and the behaviours and attitudes of the characters, showrunner, and fans in regards to calling Rory Williams Rory Pond and Amy Williams Amy Pond. I thought that if anyone read my comment, they would be familiar with the show and that I didn't need to spell out that 'Amy Williams' meant that she had chosen to change her name. If I had thought that, I would have done so.
