MTE. The problem was TATM was advertised as "heart-breaking" when, at least for me, it wasn't. Even the overreaction to the P.S. short is hilarious. The Doctor Who Tumblr refused to blog after they posted the short and I thought it was the funniest, most overdramatic thing that Tumblr's ever done.

Some people get emotional about some characters and not others. I don't think that's really all that weird. There's no way to care about your tv show wrong.

And I think everyone eventually moves on from a show. Your friends might find it sad, but it's not really a big deal that you've moved on or no longer care. It's just a show.

I admit I felt rather underwhelmed by the Ponds' departure. It just didn't hit the right buttons for me to get reakly emotional, which is odd because I am a total crybaby when it comes to films/TV.

Have you seen the PS scene for the last DW episode though? I teared up watching it; I think if it had been filmed properly for the series it would have delivered the emotional punch I needed.

I loved the Pond's departure. I didn't cry because they were still alive and together. But it was bittersweet because they could never see the Doctor again. I think that was one of my favorite Who episodes ever. I loved every minute of it.

I was happy to see the Ponds go. They felt so superfluous throughout series 7. I still don't understand why series 6 wasn't the end of their story. So my reaction to The Angels Take Manhattan was more "FINALLY! It's about time! Don't let the door hit you on the way out." as opposed to any feeling of sadness.

Plus, like the show didn't do enough to convince me as to why the Ponds would never be able to see the Doctor? The Doctor couldn't land the Tardis in Jersey and take a train to visit his friends becauuuuseee??? And River could obviously use her vortex manipulator since she had to drop off the manuscript and that was how she got to 1938 New York in the first place, so she couldn't go fetch her parents because???????

So my head canon is that after getting some space from the Doctor, Amy and Rory realized how much he fucked their lives. Amy intentionally created the time loop in her afterword by saying they never saw the Doctor again. And she didn't mention the son that they adopted (as per that little extra scene that is exactly like Blink where said son brings the letter to Brian) because she didn't want the Doctor to know about him and fuck up his life too.

Anyway, the writing was nine kinds of sloppy and that took away most of the emotional punch for me. Plus I was SUPER ready to see the Ponds leave. So yeah, I didn't have much of an emotional reaction at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree with you so much, it spoilt the episode for me. Why bother having River explain about her VM, then totally forget about it later on. When they were in the room with the old dying Rory? It was on her arm, we'd had the drama of the broken wrist, then it was just forgotten.

Also the doctor did manage to land the Tardis with River's help, clearly it could be done. I hate the way Moffat wrote them as if nothing really bothered them, like having a baby unexpectedly, then the baby gets taken, and they don't really have much experience of her, oh and then they just get separated for life from their daughter and their family and friends back in England, with no effort or attempt made to sort it out.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, all of this.

I used to love Amy but when it became her and Rory and it was all about their love for each other I just got bored.

And we knew the Pongs were leaving so it wasn't muvh of a surprise.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the Ponds were ready to go but the last ten minutes of that episode - from the moment Rory was zapped back in time for the last time - still had me crying uncontrollably (though not out of sadness alone). Even a few days afterwrds, just thinking of that very last image made me teary-eyed. Different strokes.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've had fandoms I've lost interest in, so I can kind of relate on that. Sometimes you just lose the emotional investment in a show.

Personally I was still sad over the Ponds' departure, though the episode could have been better written. Keppler though - I loathed that guy and he's one of the few characters I've ever rejoiced to see killed off.

I'm just here to find out the name of that gorgeous font the OP used for "Saturday" and "Sunday", so I can go find it. Anyone recognize it? OP?? Please do tell! C:

Though now I look at it, the font used for the rest of the secret would be useful as well. What's that one, too!

The "Saturday/Sunday" font looks like Scriptina font to me. :)

I'm definitely partial to that font m'self. ^^ Hope that helps!

And on-topic, I didn't get any kind of emotional punch when it came to the Ponds' departure, either. Doctor Who has kind of failed to deliver the same kind of emotions it used to, ever since Moffat took over. So it didn't surprise me that the departure was "meh."

Not holding much faith that the new companion will change the way the show feels, either.

Scriptina indeed and Hand of Sean I think for the handwriting. I love both and they're super useful, each in their own way.

I think you shouldn't feel bad. DW is the only show on TV where change is not only expected, but welcomed. Some people like some Doctors more than others, some companions more than others, etc. And you can come and go as you please. That's why this show is so amazing!

I was sad to see them go because I loved, loved the Ponds but I feel that I definitely could've felt more. For starters, the writing could've been better but also because I feel that as of late Doctor Who has tried throwing too many damned (half-assed) things at us and I find myself feeling some sort of investment-fatigue.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was expecting to be meh about their departure because it really was about time they left and I've stopped caring very much about DW as well (11 and Moffat could also leave, if you ask me). I did start bawling fairly early into the episode though (urgh, hormones).

I'm hoping the new companion will make me care a bit more about it again, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much.

Ponds are done? Thank God. Now I will watch DW again.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
My reaction exactly. I love Eleven, but found the Ponds unbearable.

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-10-13 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't really a big deal. If you don't care about something anymore, just move on? Nobody's going to judge you for it. :\

It sucks to fall out of love with a show, but you shouldn't be ashamed of it, OP. Tastes change. Things get old. New things come in :) Enjoy your other fandoms, OP. Let the judgers judge.

I try to keep up with the show at least enough that I won't be in the dark later on, but I haven't liked it since Moffat took over. A lot of it has to do with Amy, who I can't stand. I can't stand Matt Smith as the Doctor, either. A lot of it also has to do with Moffat's style; I think he was a great script writer for the show when RTD was running it, but he just can't deliver as the showrunner. I have a fantasy in which the BBC replaces him so he can focus on Sherlock. IMHO that would be a win-win situation because Sherlock would be produced and released much faster and DW would have the chance to be good again.

My biggest complaint about the show is "The Ponds". It bothers me in ways most of the people I know in fandom just can't understand. Rory is the only character I like (WTF did they do to River Song? She was awesome when we first met her!). I always thought Rory deserved someone better than Amy. I hate that Moffat, the Doctor, Amy, and the fandom constantly overlook his strengths and view him as a buffoon, and I despise beyond all else the inherent emasculation in calling him Rory Pond and calling Amy Williams Amy Pond. It sickens me. Some women I know have said that this empowers Amy and, by extension, female viewers, but that is not the case at all. Denigrating someone does empower the person doing it; it makes them a bully.

As as Sherlock fan: OH, SWEET JESUS NO.

I realize I may be taking the bait here, but

... and I despise beyond all else the inherent emasculation in calling him Rory Pond and calling Amy Williams Amy Pond. It sickens me. Some women I know have said that this empowers Amy and, by extension, female viewers, but that is not the case at all. Denigrating someone does empower the person doing it...

WHAT. NO. A man taking his wife's name is no more, and no less, denigrating than a woman taking her husband's name. It is a personal choice. And it certainly isn't unfair to the husband for the wife not to take his name.

Now, I don't watch the show. Is it the case that neither of them changed their names, everyone keeps calling him Rory Pond, and he feels dehumanized and embarrassed by people disregarding his preference? Then yes, that's a valid complaint, especially if it's played for laughs. ...Oddly, I don't think I'd sympathize if she did change her name, but everyone keeps using 'Pond'.

Also, I would be thrilled to see 'emasculate' disappear from the language.

Really? They left? Huh for some reason I was wondering if we'd ever get a shot at a new companion. Out of curiosity does anyone know where I could watch this episode online?
