This. The sad thing is that I really want to like AE, but dear Christ on a bike, their music is just tedious to me. Which is a shame because I really like Angela's voice, but there's only so much a singer can do if I'm just not feeling the other parts of their music.

go for it, op! when i sing it sounds like cats being strangled in a wet burlap bag so i'm always rooting for someone who can belt out a song, no matter the genre.

Allow me to introduce you to Runhild Gammelsæter, who, when she was 17, was a teeny tiny little blond girl who made chandeliers crash to the floor.

Holy fuck. I can't really say I like it, but it's hella impressive! The simple fact that the human throat is capable of producing such a sound is pretty awe-inspiring, but the fact that she can actually sustain it for that long... Wow. I am seriously impressed.

(Also a little terrified. But just a little.)

I'm not a huge death metal fan (although I like other types of metal) but I TOTALLY think you should go for it! I love it when a band does something 'unexpected" like using a singer you wouldn't normally expect for a certain genre, and you sound like you've got a real passion for it and know what you're doing. I'm rooting for you, OP!

You need to look up Maria Brink and find some inspiration. She's a tiny blonde woman who's already done that, and she's awesome. If she can do it, you can too. You Tube 'Welcome to the Gun Show' by In This Moment. Then brace yourself.

Do what you want. To hell with the haters. Just growl at them menacingly and they'll go away. ;-)

While I am not into death metal, I still say go for it. I am tall but very slim, so nobody expects the throaty sounds and epic belting that can come out of my mouth. It's a delight every time, from karaoke to being on stage in a band. Try it! TRY IT! Music is so much fun if it's your thing, and there's no reason not to give it a shot. :)

The metal music scene is a goddamn sausagefest that could definitely use a few kickass ladies. So definitely go for it, op!

Besides, just imagine the faces everyone who dismissed you as a joker would make after they found out that you're able to deliver brutal vocals. That would be priceless.

It definitely is, and while there are a decent number of bands in the gothic metal scene that have women vocalists, it is usually made clear that the men are the "real" band and the women are just a pretty voice. >:(

(With some exception. I think Within Temptation, Sharon is actually the frontrunner, but other bands -- *cough* Nightwish -- have made it very clear with their actions that the women don't have a lot of power.)

"teeny tiny" is 5'0" and 100 lbs.

Go for it, OP! Metal needs more kickass women, and if you can grunt with the best of 'em, then there's no reason to hide your light under a bushel.

(I'm a short pudgy girl who can belt it out in a booming alto and writes her own lyrics, and I'd love to have a symphonic/gothic metal band of my own someday -- but with less big, pretty dresses and more dark, brutal imagery. We can kick down the door to the boys' club together.)

The people who tell you not to pursue your dream are just bitter because they never achieved theirs. Fuck the haters, and do your own thing, girl.
