Shit, I'm guilty of this. It's just so repetitive to say the same namse over and over again that you get self-conscious it sounds stupid.

Using names never sounds stupid. There's always the pronouns option, but just be careful with those too so the reader knows who's who.

Anything is better than epitaphs. Anything.

Bob. Bob. Bobbobbobbobbobbobbobbob.

Although I agree that referring to characters by their epitaphs could get confusing, especially if they're still alive.

1) At any time that you can use a pronoun without it being confusing, use a pronoun. This will prevent the name from getting repetitive.

2) At all other times, use the character's name.

3) If you want to describe someone, describe them using a description, not an epitaph.

I'm giving you a hard time for using "epitaph" when you mean, I assume, "epithet".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure you mean "epithets". But yes.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm of the opinion that epithets, like anything, are okay in moderation. There are a lot of people who tend to use them way, way too much, when a name or a pronoun or even just a simple "the other (man/woman/child/whatever)" would suffice. But honestly, a epithet here and there isn't going to kill a story completely, and they do have their uses. You just have to stop and think about how you're using them and if it works with the flow of the story. Obviously YMMV, though, since I know a lot of people who vehemently anti-epithet in all circumstances.

Yes, thank you.

Getting sick of all the epithet hate. Just because people use a tool incorrectly doesn't mean the tool doesn't work.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
This. the idea that you can never, never use them is as daft as "you can never use anything but 'said'". Context is all.

Name, yes. Pronoun, yes. "The other (man, etc.)," hell no. I hate "the other" and its variants for the same reason that OP hates epithets: the vast majority of the time it's used in situations when the POV character wouldn't think of the other character in those relational terms. The construction works fine in third person omniscient, but most fanfiction uses a tight third person or first person POV; consequently, "the other" throws me out of the story almost every time I see it.
