So nice of you to include jewish in that list of qualities you find repulsive. :|

DA
Have you seen the show? Because the fact that he's Jewish is specifically used to make him unlikable. His mother is worse. The whole thing is sickening and there's no way for fans to address it to people who aren't fans in a way that doesn't make us look like antisemitic assholes.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Agreed. Howard is proof that anti-Semitism is still socially acceptable. If a character from any other minority was treated that way the SJW backlash would be off the charts.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, Raj's ethnicity is being played for laughs, too, and he's Indian.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the difference is that Raj is actually a likeable character and not someone you'd want to punch in the face in real life.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK. Sometimes Raj strays into "I'm owed a hot woman!" territory. Maybe not to the same extent as Howard.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I want to slap Raj - he's such a creepy little fucker. It's sad, because he used to be one of the "saner" characters. I think he, Stuart, Penny, Amy and Sheldon have gone backwards in terms of characterization, while Leonard, Howard, and Bernadette have moved forwards.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
As is Sheldon's super-Christian, non-PC mother.

I have watched the show, I don't follow it though and I would never call myself a fan.
And if you find the whole thing sickening, then why are you a fan?

The way the OP wrote it didn't address the show's portrayal of Howard as Jewish as being a reason to be unlikable, just the fact that he IS Jewish. It's an important distinction, especially with a show that has it's fair share of offensive stereotypes and characterization. He's a gross character that gives people more than enough reasons to be repulsed by him. If you can't find a way to address it without having to add 'but don't worry we're not antisemetic' then that's a problem.

If you're not familiar with the show, then you're not going to understand the perspective of the show's fans. In the show, the fact that Howard is Jewish and the portrayal are the same thing.

If you can't find a way to address it without having to add 'but don't worry we're not antisemetic' then that's a problem. There is definitely a problem with the character's portrayal and there is an ongoing campaign by fans to have it changed. Will we be successful? Probably not. We have been effective enough that major storylines including Howard incorporate fewer negative stereotypes than before. But that one sickening portrayal does not mean we can't like the other characters or their storylines.

As for having to caveat "we're not antisemitic": fans frequently have to explain the context of things to people who aren't fans but for some reason reply to posts here. That leads us to believe we're interacting with other fans only to have to spend a ridiculous amount of time explaining things to you SJWs.

AYRT

The fact that you as fans are actively campaigning for change is great, it really is, I wish more fanbases would.

And I would like to say that it was a genuine question as to why you were still a fan, not just me being catty. You can like problematic things, I know I sure as hell do, as long as you acknowledge there is a problem, which it is evident you have.

What I still have to come back to is the fact that there is literally NO REASON why 'jewish' had to be included as a reasonable excuse in and of itself to dislike the character. If the in-show portrayal is problematic, then list the stereotypical problematic characteristics. You are right, I'm not familiar with the show in it's current state but that really doesn't change a thing. Saying that there are things a character does that are annoying and are ascribed to being Jewish and using Jewish as a negative adjective are completely different in a really big way, and it's really easy to avoid being offensive and coming off as antisemitic, it's not like it would take an essay to have amended the initial comment.

Also if discussing a certain thing is reserved only for those who like it that what the fuck is the point in even having a platform for discussing ANYTHING.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

When another character calls Howard on his shit he replies "I'm Jewish" and smiles and shrugs when he does it. I took it that the OP was referring to that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

But that's really not what the OP said. They listed Jewish as a reason not to like the character. I just... I don't understand why this is something that should be excused?

If the OP meant that Howard uses religion as an excuse to be gross, then why didn't they just say that? That takes 7 words to say, gets the point across and doesn't force the OP and other fans of the show to defend antisemitism.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Because in the show those are the things that are listed as his faults by him and other characters. I don't see why they should have to elaborate on something that's well known in the fandom on the chance that someone who doesn't know the show comes along later and reads it. I know the show so I understand the dark humor they're using. You don't so you're offended. It's been explained to you and you still don't understand. Your problem, not the fans'.

AYRT

Just...what?

I'm sorry but that makes absolutely no sense. Last time I checked this was a public forum, not a TBBT forum, so fuck you I have a right to be here.

Just because I don't like something doesn't mean I don't understand it. I watched the first 3 seasons of the show in its entirety before I gave up. I'm aware of the type of humour they use. It's pretty similar to the way they use Sheldon's obvious (tho undiagnosed or acknowledged) Aspergers as an in-show excuse for him being a dick. But you don't get to go onto a public forum and include 'has Aspergers' in a list of reasons to find the character repulsive and then reserve the right to not get called on it.

It doesn't take a lot of context to get your point across without being offensive. Stop. Making. Excuses.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What is it you're looking for?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
An acknowledgement that what the OP said was offensive?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You got that. If you're looking for the OP to do it, abusing the other anons probably isn't going to make that happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm pretty sure I never got that. I got a whole lot of defensiveness and excuses and offers of ways to differently interpret the initial post.

And really, I'm abusing anons now? I'm pretty sure I was being pretty fucking polite back there (even complimentary) until that one anon said I essentially had no right to be offended or even enter the discussion.

If those anons had acknowledged it was a shitty post by the OP then it would have been over, but instead, this whole thread became even more angering because they were defending antisemitism while saying that there is no reason for someone to be offended by it.

What the fuck is even going on here.

edited to add: ascribed to being Jewish *in the show*
(also fix that "in *ITS* current state" yay grammar!)
