Yes, agreed!

It tends to annoy me when it's overused. But sometimes I just remember how my first short stories looked like (thanks to my teachers) and suddenly I can't be mad anymore.

What immediatly grinds my gears, though, is when people constantly use "the older/younger man/woman". No, just.. no.
I prefer hair colors over age comparison XD

Especially when the characters haven't even been assigned ages in canon, so you have to work out who 'the older man' is from context. And in that case, what's the point?

Or when "the older man" is 36 rather than 35.

Or when "the older man" is 18 and the younger is like 16/17, it's tacky. I just get a picture in my head the older one aged 40 years overnight and that's not what I want to see in the middle of a romantic or smut scene.
