I forgot how fun it is to learn languages!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm learning Arabic at the moment (no real reason, except that it's widely spoken and I didn't know it at all). I'm about halfway through learning the script and learning some animal vocab to practice hearing the different sounds, all using free apps, and I had forgotten just how much fun this stuff is!

I love learning new scripts! I love hearing links with words I know in other languages! I love starting to hear differences that I couldn't hear yesterday!

Yay! :D

What joy have you rediscovered? Or what language are you learning?

Also, am I ever actually going to be able to hear the difference between siin and Saad?

I started learning Spanish at uni a couple of weeks ago. It's been a couple of years since I studied a language (German in high school) and I'd forgotten how much I love it. And also that it's something I'm actually pretty good at.

I'm also planning to pick up German again, and learn it on my own time.

What resources are you using to learn Arabic? It's a language I've wanted to learn for ages but I've never been quite adventurous enough learn a language with a whole different script.

Yay! I love German, and it's been surprisingly useful in my life.

I'm using the TenguGo Arabic Script free app (Its icon calls is "Arabic Alpha"), which is pretty good for learning the basics, combined with the "Muslim Kids Series 'Hijaiya'" free app, which is aimed at getting Muslim toddlers recognising and writing the basic (non-connected) characters. I'm finding the quizzes on the TenguGo app a very effective way to learn, when I do them repeatedly.

And I'm using iLang Basic Arabic free app to practice hearing sounds: the memory game is fun and pretty easy to get into.

I'm using free apps, so I can learn in spare moments during the day. I'm sure there's loads of resources on the web, especially as Muslim groups want to help as many people to learn Arabic as possible.

I'm learning English (well, I have finished learning it, as much as one can "finish" learning a language) and I love it.

I wish I loved other languages as much. Now that I won't have English classes any more I'd love to pick up another language, but there isn't one that interests me enough :(

If you don't speak a cyrillic language, how about one of those? I think there are a good quantity of resources to learn Russian, and once you've learnt that you'd be able to have a stab at other related languages. Unlike Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Mandarin, it uses a script that's used for a whole bunch of languages.

omg I love Arabic

I've always wanted to learn it but I'm thinking about learning Hebrew next (yay languages)

I recently rediscovered I lovelovelove ADORE painting with gouache. Why did I ever stop?

Ooo, I nearly went for Hebrew, but I thought Arabic would help me talk to more people that I couldn't already talk to. And there are certain archaeological sites that I'd like to visit some day, if they're safe to visit and haven't been destroyed, which will be easier if I know some Arabic and Turkish.

Hebrew's on the list!

What sort of things do you paint in gouache? Do you buy it, or mix it up? I'm glad you've rediscovered it.

I usually just buy white gouache and mix it up with watercolors, but it's fun to play with different colored gouache colors as well.

Yesterday I successfully had a conversation in Spanish with a native speaker. I hadn't realized so much of it was still with me, so I feel really accomplished. :D

Marhabaa! Et-kellum el-arabeeya. U-hib katheeran. durp

Wait til you take a few more semesters, it'll be like unfolding a ridiculously awesome puzzle when you learn about the 10 forms, and how you can figure out what a word is doing based on the root word and the form.

(protip: sin and Saad will have different effects on the vowels that succeed them, same with dhaal and Daad, kef and qef, etc. Saad, Daad, Thaad will all produce dark vowels in the back of the throat. Seen, tet, dhaal, will all produce vowels that are light and in the front of the mouth.)

At the moment, I'm picking up Chinese from a friend. I'm hoping to either brush up on my Arabic next semester, or take some Korean or Russia. I have a freakish knack for languages, not gonna lie.

I'm trying to learn German with a free online program. (I took an eight-week class to introduce me to it.) I got interested because my favorite music is in German and wound up really loving the language.

I'm getting better at deciphering words in written text, but I'm still not good at understanding the spoken language (even though the program has lots of listening exercises) or at composing my own sentences (which the program obviously can't correct for me.)

Wow, I like parentheses.

I've got an eternally ongoing struggle to learn Polish (my parents are from there, and like 95% of my family still lives there, so). Alas! Learning languages (well, mostly remembering vocab) is pretty much the achilles heel of my learning abilities. Attempts at French and German at school can attest to this, and I even had to go to a weekly polish school for nine years and I've got almost nothing to show for it ;_;

I have rediscovered the joy of writing a project I've been wrangling for four years (I'm on the third draft @_@). I've suddenly got a new energy for it, and I guess it's all on the back of a character who just kinda wandered in out of nowhere.

And as for languages, I'd really like to learn Arabic or Chinese. They're really neat languages, and they'd be really useful (I just moved to Toronto recently and there are huge populations of Chinese and Arabic folks).

Hey, welcome to Toronto! There are many different dialects of Chinese and Arabic. Do you know which dialect you want to learn? Or, do you know the dialect spoken by most of the Chinese or Arabic people around you?

It has been really cold so far this fall. Please keep warm! :3

I think Mandarin is the most common Chinese dialect around where I live? I'm not entirely sure.

(I've been borrowing all of my boyfriend's sweaters and coats to keep myself warm. @_@ Brrr!)

I need to get back into my French. I had been learning it sporadically in my life - first in elementary school and then throughout high school.

I can look over the copies of Paris Match we get at work and sum up articles and I can spot errors in subtitles for French films, but I'd love to be fluent.

My only issue is finding the time for it in my life right now.

I've also been meaning to really get into Norwegian, since it is my primary heritage and I have family in Norway.

I love learning languages! There's just something satisfying about realising that the new vocabulary is actually sticking in your head.

Sadly, I'm not to good at pronunciation, writing just sticks better than spoken things.

Another problem I have is that I get all excited when a shiny new language catches my eye and kind of drop the one I was previously learning. :(

So besides English and German which I've known since I was little and the French and Latin I leant in school (I forgot most of the latter though, when do you really get to use Latin?), I've dabbled in Spanish, Finnish, Mandarin and one or two conlanguages.
I'm currently considering learning Georgian - such pretty writing! I'm not sure if I'll have the time though, since I really need to get started on writing my masters thesis...
