Well, yeah. Internet, the way it is now compared to then, makes it so easy to get media that may not be immediately available to you. Whether it's through legit purchase or piracy, or even from a signal boost on twitter/tumblr that gets you interested in things.

Not to mention the ease of which anyone can participate in fandom right away.
