Fandoms popping up overnight

[identity profile] with-rainfall.livejournal.com 2012-10-13 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me or are fandoms springing up much more quickly these days? Like, did this happen with LotR back in 2000 or whenever FotR was released?

Yeah, I agree -- I've seen kinkmemes being created after one episode of a new TV series has aired, and sometimes a fandom gets started even earlier than that.

However... I don't think fandoms have the same staying power as they once did. I mean, there are still people writing Highlander fics, but I can't see Teen Wolf or whatever still being an active fandom in ten years time.

Yeah, that's such a bummer to me. :( I tend to be really behind on stuff, but it used to be that I could still find at least a small, active fan community a few years after something aired. Nowadays it seems like people jump from one fandom to the next based on whatever's just recently come out, and sort of abandon the older things.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever gotten involved in a fandom right when it started. I'm always a year or two behind.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I remember talking in message boards about LOTR before the first movie was even out, and I was able to find a Tolkien-focused fan group on Yahoo! that was really active pretty soon after the movie came out.

I do feel like I'm seeing more fandoms start BEFORE a thing is out, though. Like Miraculous Ladybug already getting a fandom after a trailer for it was uploaded, or people getting into Elementary once the show was announced and tracking down a leaked version of the pilot before it even aired.

This.

Also the fact that LOTR dates back from a time where internet didn't exist, but instead there were penpals etc. who you can't find trace of now, so who is to tell a book didn't have a tiny fandom somewhere right after it got sold back then.

Well, it kind of depends what you mean by "fandom".

If you mean "writing fic", then most things didn't have a fandom. If you just mean being involved in discussions and recommendations and hyping things up and generally being fannish about stuff, then yes, in the sense that most science fiction and fantasy books, at least, were tied up with science fiction and fantasy fandom.

I think the only fandoms that really wrote a lot of fic back in the day was Sherlock Holmes. And then Lord of the Rings somewhat, and then Star Trek.

Idk whether LOTR is the best example of a new fandom, seeing as the already established book fanbase/fandom was poised and waiting (some even for years) for the movie release(s), so it's no wonder the internet fandom sprung up quickly.

In terms of fandoms starting more quickly these days, I just think that's because people are better at/know the drill of LJ/DW/Tumblr fandom now. Which means that the moment someone even remotely likes something it's *boom* BNF posting to their large authorship about their favourite shiny new thing! *boom* kinkmeme! *boom* ONE BILLION ANIMATED GIF SETS WITH STUPID COLOUR SCHEMES! However, just because people get started on this stuff earlier, doesn't actually mean that fandom is going to stick around or even take off at all.

But I do agree that all the readysetgo fandom schema that's going on at the moment doesn't bode well for the longevity of current active fandoms, since they'll always be something new to move on to. Not having something better - and well publicized, and of the same genre - on the horizon is why I assume fandoms like Highlander and The Sentinel stuck around for so long.

/sorry for the essay

Agreed on the LOTR example, I was on a forum a few years before the movie came out, and we talked about the books, predominantly (as well as doing a lot of movie speculation, of course!).

Things like Tumblr allow for something to get spread a hell of a lot faster than it did ten years ago, when you'd have to make a forum or a chatroom then hope people found it. Now, just search for something you're interested in, found it, there.

Agreed on longevity, too. Entmoot (the forum I was at) is STILL GOING.

Well, yeah. Internet, the way it is now compared to then, makes it so easy to get media that may not be immediately available to you. Whether it's through legit purchase or piracy, or even from a signal boost on twitter/tumblr that gets you interested in things.

Not to mention the ease of which anyone can participate in fandom right away.

You're not ther only one. There has been Rise of The Guardians fanart for months now even though the movie isn't out yet.
