Most of the writing advice that I've seen actually advises against overusing alternative dialogue markers in lieu of say, though? Yes, it gets repetitive if you use "say" after every single line of dialogue, but the alternatives are something that need to be used in moderation, or they get extremely distracting. I'm not opposed to a "whispered" or a "mumbled" or an "asked" or what have you here and there (and sometimes they're the better choice), but you just need to be careful not to go overboard. And, you know, realize that you don't have to put a dialogue tag on every single line of dialogue you write, since that gets old really fast.

I think that was their point, though? The overuse of increasingly 'creative' epithets comes from the same line of thinking that teaches kids not to use the same dialogue tag over and over again. Because being restricted to the character's name and a pronoun is apparently 'too boring'.
