OP

Argh, I edited the main bit of the secret because it sounded too bitchy, and now it doesn't make sense. :(

The original 'body text' had a line about Thea Sharrock being incompetent, rather than the line about expecting more, but that sounded wanky, so I changed it last minute.

Basically, I have real issues with women directing films about men and war because they seem to try and focus and emotions and frailty when that really isn't what the play is about.

Thea made Henry soft and stupid. She cut the hanging of Bardolph to such an extent that it was meaningless; the murder of the baggage boys just didn't happen in her adaptation (and yet, Henry still has his rage in the middle of the battle field, which just makes him look... what? I don't even know) and the speech before Agincourt ("we few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother, be he ne'er so vile" was delivered to his knights! I can only conclude that the two of them are illiterate and have never encountered the play before. But then I let Mr Hiddleston off, because I heard him speak on Newsnight and he knows what he's on about. Therefore my conclusion is that Thea Sharrock is an idiot. But I'm not allowed to say that because 'her interpretation is just as valid as any and she was only trying to show Henry's human side'.

OK, that was maybe too long a topic for my secret. I just have a lot of rage.

Of course you're allowed to say that.

You just look like a pretentious dick who cares far too much about works of fiction when you do.

(And, really: someone potentially not having read a particular play makes one "illiterate?" LOL)

Well, it kind of does when you're attempting to direct that same play. LOL.

You're right - although I don't think it extends to women directors in general. I mean, look at 'The Hurt Locker'.

Thea Sharrock is just plain crap and can't direct, or even understand the text properly. I'd love to force all future Shakespeare directors to write a bog-standard A-Level essay on their text before starting :D

Even my brother, who is almost anti-art, noticed it. I showed him chunks of all the plays and he noticed straight away that R2 had a colour palette and an overall point and that the others were just muddled. He also pointed out that the battle in H5 was totally illogical and would end up with the cavalry being hit by their own arrows.

Sorry, I know this is a few days old so you probably won't even see it but I just had to comment here.

Thea Sharrock is one of the UK's greatest contemporary theatre directors. I've seen a large amount of her work and time and time again it has been nuanced, gripping and sophisticated. She is a highly experienced director, as well as a very intelligent individual.

None of this means you can't like her Henry V, of course. Personally, I loved it. I felt like she unravelled a narrative in it that I'd never see before - one in which Henry wasn't glorified or demonised but simply a man learning on the job. I saw a talking heads interview with her where she stated that a lot of people had asked her whether it was going to be "pro-war or anti-war", to which she replied "neither. I'm just telling the story", which is exactly what she did. I'm sorry it disappointed you in terms of how you envisage Henry V in your head but that is the joy of theatre - there will be other Henry Vs and sooner or later your Henry V will come along. For me, seeing the Crispin's day speech done to a small group of men was incredibly affecting - Henry was simply asking them to be brave - yet it stood in stark contrast to the speech at the gates of Harfleur where he was clearly shocking himself as he made his threats to rape and murder. "Soft and stupid" - I disagree.

Ultimately, you are of course free to be disappointed - I didn't think much of the Henry IVs, personally - but there's really no justififcation for labelling either Sharrock or Hiddleston "illiterate", "incompetent" or an "idiot" simply because their interpretation was not yours.
