It doesn't yet have a consciousness or the ability to feel emotions or sensations, it's basically and egg which will never be hatched by a hen. I'm not saving a little chick's life by not eating eggs. By that logic, every single man on this planet kills millions of babies every time they masturbate.

Plants aren't alive, insects don't have traditional heartbeats, so they aren't living creatures. And a heartbeat still doesn't change the fact that it still doesn't have a consciousness and the ability to feel emotions (or even the ability to feel instincts), which are, depending on which species we are talking about, also the requirements of life.
