Yeah, I did that once for someone who I considered a friend on deviantart.

They had a minor freak-out about it and started making posts to the extent of "NO ONE EVER SHOULD DRAW MY CHARACTERS BUT ME."

Never again.

That's weird. I had someone ask if they could color one of my pieces because they liked the line work and the character. Crumb, I was flattered to pieces that someone wanted to use their time to color something I did. Wonder what was going on in that artist's head that made him/her freak out?

aw, that's unfortunate: I'm always entirely flattered and preen for hours when anyone asks if they can draw for or translate anything I've written, so it's never occurred to me that not everyone would have this reaction.

I guess ... ask first?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
??? Rude!

I got that once, and I was flattered beyond belief (and did one of hers). Most artists I've interested with think that initiation = epicly awesome flattery :)

I'd PM them and ask them what they think. Most people will be flattered and happy that someone else likes their character(s) enough to want to draw them as a gift/for fun, but then like the anon above me said, some people are just fucking insanely obsessive and/or think people are going to steal their characters.

(Sometimes shitty characters, which cracks me up.)

Back when I did art, I loved art trades; it's fun to draw other people's art and getting your characters drawn in a new style is always exciting. I gave up art for writing so I don't do art trades anymore and I'm not sure how people feel about them in general.

Most people tend to love it when a fan shows appreciation of their characters, but if it makes you nervous you should ask first. The worst they can do is decline.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I would LOVE if someone offered to do art for my characters, because as a writer with an overactive imagination and absolutely no skill at all to draw humanoid art (as in I'm great with abstract and sometimes landscape, but not people), I have all these scenes and shots in my head that I would die to see actually drawn.

It makes me sad to think there are people who think that someone drawing art for their characters is going to "steal" them. :[

Same. I secretly wish someone would feel compelled to draw art for my fics.
brightblueink: Madoka looking surprised and holding a cat (this is here because it's adorable)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here! I wish I could draw my own stuff, but I can't even do stick figures. I've had people draw stuff from my fanfic before--either original characters, or scenes from them--and it's ALWAYS made my day (or week, or even month).

I do agree that asking first is probably for the best, but I'm pretty sure most people would be really happy.

Have you ever thought about signing up for big bang challenges? People sign up to write fic, and other folk sign up to make art for fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually commissioned art for my character. If someone was engaged enough with a story of mine to want to make art for it, I'd be incredibly flattered.

I would be so flattered if someone did that for me but also bummed because I don't think I'd ever be able to reciprocate. One, I just don't think I quite good enough for it. Two, I doubt I'd ever finish, I'm really bad about things like that.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
If that's your art, you aren't bad.

What you need is impusliveness. A speed run. Draw it. POST IT. POST IT FAST SOMEPLACE YOU CAN'T TAKE IT DOWN. BETTER YET, SEND IT. CAN'T TAKE BACK A SEND. DO IT BEFORE YOUR BRAIN TELLS YOU ALL THOSE STUPID REASONS NOT TO.

You gotta blitzkrieg your own doubts.

If you want to take the edge off... a lot of people will post the fanart they get. find somebody you've seen do this. You already know they are receptive to this. Send to them first!

BUT DO IT. Hell, use 4chan. you can post anon and get feedback.

... don't post in /ic/ though. not unless you want your every flaw deconstructed. Of course, if you want brutal but useful critique, post there.

OP is the secret drawing yours? Because it's fab. I think people would be flattered, just contact them and ask.

You should PM them or leave a message. I had a lurker suddenly come out of nowhere asking if they could draw something for me and it was just so fucking amazing, I couldn't even. So, yeah. Tell the person first, then send it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a fanfic writer with a nice following. To me, there is no greater compliment than for an artist to produce work based on what I do. I think most writers and artists feel this way.

Creativity is a gift - when you share that gift with someone, they have to be a pretty major shit not to be flattered by it. No one puts a gun to your head to read or enjoy something other people write or draw, and the least they can do is take that [you liked their stuff enough to be inspired by it] as a compliment.

Only a very little person indeed wouldn't appreciate you being inspired by their stuff.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I as a fanfic writer would be insanely happy if somebody drew my characters. Well, at least because I participate in a ghostly fandom and get almost no attention, let alone reviews/feedback. Loser anon is loser.

In my experience, people have responded well to fanart of their works that I've posted on my DA gallery, so I'd say go for it. Just remember to say in the description that the characters/concepts belong to (x) (and y, if the "original" was fanart).

Just draw what you want. FanArt and FanFic come with the territory of putting your work out there for public consumption.

I personally love the few art pieces i've gotten for my fic, and think it's incredibly flattering and awesome that someone not only liked it enough to put a 'face' to the character, but then put for the time and effort to make it *real*.

Come draw for me anytime. :)

I draw, myself, but I still love getting gifties. I'd say if you're really worried about it, just ask them, but otherwise, totally go for it. I mean, If they get mad then they're kind of a jerk, especially if you give credit to where the character came from.
dirac: (Default)

[personal profile] dirac 2012-10-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You could always ask them, OP! Posting your own drawings of other people's OCs might seem less scary if you know right off the bat if they'd be cool with it or not.

I don't really pay much attention to people's OCs but I sometimes find myself doodling scenes from fics I enjoyed (hell, sometimes draw fanart of other people's fanart). I'm always too afraid to post it though, I understand that a lot of writers would be flattered but I'm worried about having it look like I'm sucking up to a certain writer. Also, there's not that many writers in my current fandom right now so I feel a weird obligation that if I draw something for one author, I'd have to draw for all of them ???

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
If its for a full-sized fandom, who cares? Plenty of people are drawing and posting the characters anyways.

If its for people's OCs, unless they state somewhere that they don't want other people drawing them or want you to ask them first, most of us with OCs only have the positive sort of freak out when we see someone else draw them. I know it sure as hell makes my day even if its someone with not even half the talent of your 'quick doodle'. <3

I would be tickled to death if someone drew my characters as a surprise. As it is, I mostly have to commission stuff to see them in styles that aren't mine and that's kind of depressing.
