Yeah, I did that once for someone who I considered a friend on deviantart.

They had a minor freak-out about it and started making posts to the extent of "NO ONE EVER SHOULD DRAW MY CHARACTERS BUT ME."

Never again.

That's weird. I had someone ask if they could color one of my pieces because they liked the line work and the character. Crumb, I was flattered to pieces that someone wanted to use their time to color something I did. Wonder what was going on in that artist's head that made him/her freak out?

From AYRT's post I'd guess that it was a very severe case of ORIGINAL CHARACTER DONUT STEEL!!1!

(not the anon you replied to)
i bet the artist felt threatened by the drawing because he/she perceived it to be better than their own art

Same. I felt flattered like all hell that, when I was super active in Nu!Trek fandom and drawing a ton of random K/B art, I had some who wanted color my silly Disney inspired crossover art. I thought my art was hit, but they didn't and liked it and wanted to color it and I was all "Really?! :D"

It made me happy.

Now granted, they weren't my characters, but....still, the sentiment is the same and I don't get people who get weird about that, unless they themselves want to color it at a later date, then I could understand, thought that should be something that should be mentioned in an artist note.

aw, that's unfortunate: I'm always entirely flattered and preen for hours when anyone asks if they can draw for or translate anything I've written, so it's never occurred to me that not everyone would have this reaction.

I guess ... ask first?

??? Rude!

I got that once, and I was flattered beyond belief (and did one of hers). Most artists I've interested with think that initiation = epicly awesome flattery :)
