And this right here is why I only RP original characters who are either already in a relationship with another OC, are not remotely ready for a relationship, or are asexual. I'd a lot rather develop relationships organically, with or without canon characters.

It sounds like you've stumbled upon an RP called [community profile] the_love_hotel. That place can be filled with OOC characters and horrible smut scenes. I would suggest going to [community profile] wankgate to really read-up on what's going on with the RP-verse and get a fill of the fandoms to avoid RPing with and which games to avoid. It's also good for seeing just which games are out there and then you can look them up to see if they're your thing.

Ah yes, this seems to be just a plague among all fandoms.

RPing is great when you find someone to RP with who shares similar views of characters with you. But when they start getting off-track and heading towards OOCVille, it's not so fun anymore.

Eh, some RP is like that, but not all of is. Avoid memes and smut-based games if that's not your thing and look into more plot-based games. Or look into games that don't allow OCs, I guess.

Yeah that's what a lot of RP is comprised of, because that's the fantasy most people seem to be interested in playing out.

It's more difficult to find quality, plot-centric RP, but boy is it ever worth it.

Sounds like you just got your first taste of the wonderful world that is RPing. Funnily enough, playing out smut actually bores me. It all seems like "Insert tab A into slot B" after a while. I've found the best ways to avoid all the OCs are to A) Play a character with an odd or unattractive PB B) Play someone over the age of 40 (Old people in RP, oh noes!) or C) Search day and night until you find someone who actually can play a character without letting smut OOC-ness overtake their IC-ness. It's hard, but when you do, it's a glorious feeling.

Can I ask what you mean by "PB"?

Play-By. It refers to the icons of a person used on DW and LJ RP to represent the character.

Ah, ok! Thank you for explaining. I was trying to figure it out, but all I could think of was Peanut Butter, and that didn't make sense, lol.

Definitely stay away from tumblr rp. Not to say it's ALL bad, but the vast majority of it is and self-insert OCs are way more common there. DW/LJ may have what you're looking for, though it may be difficult to find depending on the popularity of the canon.

However, if you could give me a hint as to what characters/canon you're interested in, I (or maybe another rper who reads this) could tell you if I've seen it somewhere and maybe direct you to a game that has it.

You clearly have not spent time in many RPs that allow canon and OCs. A lot of RPs, at least the ones I've been in, are not like that at all, and many Oc players don't like hooking up their characters with canon ones.

I got into online fandom via role-play back in 02. (I wanted to write within Middle-earth but had never heard of fanfiction, and there seemed to be no crossover between fic-writers and rp-ers then, so I did not hear about it for years).
I thought the idea was fun, but soon found that I was older than every-one, because I'd been a book fan for years, and that almost all the rp-ers had only seen The Fellowship of the Ring.

Still, what I expected was huge plot-based rp, and found it was just people claiming canon characters, flirting with others, getting married and having children, who then then rp-d so they could do the same thing over and over.

In the end a couple of us who were more interested in the books, and liked writing stories created our own rp-site. Because I had seen the girls trying to interact with guys who were very young, I decided to play male characters, both canon and original.
The only trouble was the female characters wanted to marry them, so again it went back to the get married, have kids, rinse and repeat. I did this for five years (every day) and created a vast AU spanning all the continents of Middle-earth. I have no idea how much I wrote, but it bothered me that with all the potential for dramatic storylines, the mate/marriage was the most popular. It got very boring, as how many times can you write that?

I also unintentionally wrote two OC's who after a while. I realized were my first slashable couple. I knew nothing about slash, but after building their dysfunctional relationship over two years, and reading back one day, it was so obvious I experienced an epiphany. I got excited. This was new for me, who'd written het for five years in role-play, and in o-fic for years before.
I was, by then, so bored I found no joy in writing any-more, which frightened me. This discovery of slash made me enthusiastic again, but I couldn't explore the nascent relationship, as the other players had characters married to these two men, and were upset. So, I had to leave and write what I wanted.

In the end, I am glad I rp-ed as it gave me the confidence to allow people to read my writing, but I found it incredibly restricting as time went on. Some people might say, well they're your characters, why not do what you want with them? but if you've played them for years, and other people have invested their own characters into relationships with them, it's not so easy; the reaction to 'infidelity' can be explosive. It goes both ways.

Saying that, I have rp-ed with people who don't need to interact with my male characters in a romantic sense, but can create their own stories, and I've rp-d a bit of slash. When I first rp-d, slash could get you banned from rp sites.

I could write an essay on rp-ing male characters; I ended up feeling as if they were all just being 'used'. d;-) But, so saying, I would still rp; I would just rp the characters I now write who are not up for marriage, and are all bisexual.

Long time rper here

It can be like that, particularly if you run into certain rps like The Love Hotel, or some of the rp circles on tumblr*, but there are a lot where smut isn't the only thing that happens. There are a lot of rpers who go into the character interactions [not just the romantic ones], and they're fun to play with and read the rps of. It's just a matter of finding them sometimes.

Admittedly, I'm falling out of fandom rp and back into the original rps so I don't know anywhere to really direct you for examples [and I'm hesitant to point you over to asking some of the comms I do know of because the people there aren't...exactly the nicest folks around], but they do exist.

* Those aren't the only places, of course, just the first that spring to mind
