Billy and Teddy are boring. Rictor and Star are good, but Apollo and Midnighter are still the best.

They were you mean. New 52 just makes me hope Jenny's "decision" was that Midnighter will never find his true love. Chinspike deserves misery, the cat punching bastard.

Everything in the new-52 sucks. Except Animal Man, but the thing about Animal Man is that it doesn't feel like it's been rebooted. It's the same story as ever, except with a more horror-tinged angle.

(I'm still horribly bitter about them ruining my all-time favorite fictional character, the Phantom Stranger. And Oracle, my all-time favorite superheroine. BRING BACK MY SUPER-LIBRARIAN. ;___;)

What they did to the phantom stranger has no sense, no sense at all.

It really bugs the shit out of me, because it goes against everything the character stands for, and has stood for since his introduction in the 1950s.

He isn't driven by grief for a melancholy past or because EVERYTHING I TOUCH DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES. He doesn't seem to even care about his past; that's why he has four different origin stories. It's one big old shrug because, hey, who gives a fuck, there's more important things to worry about for this guy. He's always been driven by hope for the future and love for people. Sure, sometimes he seems like a dick, but he has good intentions. He doesn't intervene because he wants to help people become stronger on their own, rather than solving their problems *for* them. So that's why he trots out the cryptic but uplifting speeches, and why, despite appearing omnipotent, he usually hangs back. Because, while he's seen everything, and usually brings gloomy news, he still appears to have a romantic and dreamy view of the world, and he thinks people are amazing and worth helping. That's why he shows up. He only appears in the worst of times because that's when he's needed most--to bring hope and light to the people he counts as his friends.

Instead, in the new 52, he doesn't intervene because he's a whiny emo-dude afraid of betraying people, because he's Judas and EVERYTHING HE TOUCH DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES. (cue CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIIIIIIN~) It's a disappointingly cliche story for what was an extremely unique character.

I have not read a lot with the stranger but even I could see the writers wanting to give the guy "MOAR PATHOS".
This was written by Didio, shit was to be expected but hell and it didn't disapoint D:

Yeah, Didio doesn't seem to understand subtlety or character development very well.

Exactly, and given that now many stuff is editorially mandated... and he is part of that circle... you can see why most of the new 52 sucks so much.
I am sure this title will get cancelled like OMAC was, but then he will find another character to destroy >.

While I agree with the latter part of your comment, I love me some Billy and Teddy.

...Have they made recent appearances I don't know about? Guess I should check the comm.

There's a new Young Avengers series starting in January, I believe :)

I've never figured out where to start with them, but I really want to. Any suggestions.

(Also, their real names are Bill and Ted? That's...that's hilarious and adorable.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
The main Young Avengers series? They've been collected into two trade paperbacks ("Sidekicks" and "Family Matters"), or alternatively, into one called "Young Avengers Ultimate Collection" (that also includes the special issue).

Chronologically, it's Civil War/Seige/Dark Reign/etc stuff that happens that does involve them to some extent... but I've always thought you could skip a large portion of that and still be able to read the next YA stories just fine. There's "Young Avengers Presents," which is a series that focuses on each of our main characters in the wake of Civil War, and then "Avengers: Children's Crusade" which is the next main story arc for the YA. And which you should read because Billy and Teddy are adorable in it.

(Their full names are William and Theodore, but they're Billy and Teddy to everyone. =D)

This helpful anon beat me to it. (And said it much better than I could!)

A couple other things that the Young Avengers appear in are "Avengers Fairytales" & "I am an Avenger" (both of which are just cute and fun short stories that aren't in any way serious and don't connect to any larger story). There's also "Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers" and as part of the Civil War arc there's "Civil War: Young Avengers And Runaways". I'm sure they've been in smaller appearances in other Marvel titles, but this is all I'm aware of. As the anon said, none of this stuff is super important, but if you're anything like me you might want as complete a 'collection' as you can find. I hope you get to read it, and enjoy! (Billy and Teddy are an adorable couple; one of my favorites. The rest of the team is awesome too, though.)

And when I realized they were Bill and Ted, I got a good chuckle out of it too. :)
