There was an actual ban on posting x-factor scans? what the hell? why? I actually like X-factor some of the time

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because a huge wankfest involving PAD got the first SD shut down. None of his stuff can be posted as a result.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
na

What is PAD?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I was upset that scans_daily got shut down on LJ, but I couldn't really blame PAD for that. All he did was let Marvel know it existed, and he was upfront about that when asked. And maybe it was some form of petty revenge, but someone in the comm DID tell him to DIAF for no real reason

Billy and Teddy are boring. Rictor and Star are good, but Apollo and Midnighter are still the best.

They were you mean. New 52 just makes me hope Jenny's "decision" was that Midnighter will never find his true love. Chinspike deserves misery, the cat punching bastard.

...Have they made recent appearances I don't know about? Guess I should check the comm.

This feels like a good time to ask, if I wanted to get into X-Factor in general and Rictor/Shatterstar in particular, where would be a good place to start?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
X-factor is a pretty self-contained series and I don't believe you need to know too much about the X-men canon in order to get it (though I am speaking as a long-time X-men fan). Ric/Star stuff starts at issue 45 (I think).

For early Rictor/Shatterstar stuff, you have to go all the way back to the first series of X-force. I'm not sure what specific issues to read, I'm afraid

[identity profile] cimikat.livejournal.com 2012-10-14 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be a bit biased because I absolutely love X-Factor, and say start with issue #1 of the current run. Rictor is in the cast from the very beginning, and there is a lot of development with him in those early arcs. Shatterstar doesn't appear until issue #43, with the big reunion kiss happening at the end of #45, but there is a lot of good stuff before then (except maybe the Secret Invasion tie-ins, but that's mostly because of bad art).

And while you're asking, check out the [livejournal.com profile] ricstar community on LJ. It's one of my favorite comms right now, and where I went when I first got into X-Factor and RicStar back in Feb.

Just start from X-Factor (2005) #1. Trust me, it's an amazing series right from the start and well worth the read.

scans_daily is a self-indulgent cesspool so fucking obsessed with their own rules (to the point where they yelled at a black poster claiming he was being racist against black people) and their need to be butthurt (they seem to think they're Peter David's walking wounded.) Fuck that place. Anyplace that runs out Gail Simone can't be fun.

It's really sad to see what they've become.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still so ticked about the Gail Simone thing

Both instances you cited are just two proud examples about how being over zealous with the SJ thing can warp once fun communities into a joyless shithole. If I see one more white person on the internet who tries to lecture me about racism (I'm black), I swear to god I will go crazy. Sometimes they do it while knowing I'm black and sometimes they won't know but then they'll backpedal LIKE CRAZY once I tell them

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Why was there a ban on it? It wasn't because of homophobia, was it?

[identity profile] agentofhate.livejournal.com 2012-10-14 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
A prior conflict with the books writer resulted in a ban on all of his work.

Scans_daily is horrible for many reasons these days, but that's not one of them.

Having done some research after being ignornat myself...

X-Factor's writer ended up in a flame war with some morons on the site. And then he ended up making their existece known to marvel itself. Now they claim they didn't directly result in it's being actually taken down, and if we take that as truth it is believable when they asked for Livejournal about stopping the copywrited stuff from being posted, they could have just went into panic mode and dropped the whole thing.

Apparently during it's moves, it went form an overall good community to overall so horrible a SJW cesspool Gail Simone, who is pretty friendly to the groups desires on a whole, left in disgust after being accused of the usual bullshit (which was a wide, wide stretch when you are talking about the secret six, which they were)

What about that one person that drops spoilers like it's hot: "Oh, you've heard of X? Let me tell you all the amazing spoilers that happened!" You can't tell me that's not annoying.

scans_daily isn't the only place to talk about X-Factor. Frankly, it disappoints me that people don't bring it up anywhere because it's probably one of the BEST comics out there.

[personal profile] truxillogical 2012-10-15 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh. Remembering that epic drama always makes me sad. I haven't really hung out on the new S_D as much, and I miss all the in-jokes. (Ah, El Dragon and your fiendish nemesis, The Stove!)

But even more because it was the first time I'd really heard of PAD, and I thought he sounded like an epic, awful douche. And when I went to Dragon*Con that year, showing my portfolio around, I was leery about talking to him at all. But he'd also done the Shatterstar/Rictor thing, and even not knowing a lot about it, I knew that was a pretty big deal (what, a believable gay romance with build-up and payoff in a superhero comic, as opposed to "look, here's another gay dude, now you can date"?!).

So I did. And holy cats, he was so freaking nice. He was encouraging and exciting and funny, and he even got me a chance to have George Perez look at my portfolio. But mostly, he was just plain nice.

So it makes me sad that that incident, which really spun out of control very, very quickly, colors some fan-opinion of him. I know if I hadn't talked to him, I probably would have written off picking up any of his books as being "by that jerk" and I would have missed out on some stellar stories. I think between that and the Liefield baiting, he's a good guy in person, but maybe a bit crankier on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
He's definitely crankier on the internet, and has done assorted stupid things in the past, but I agree he's actually pretty funny and personable offline.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 01:57 am (UTC)(link)

Sums him up nicely, yes.
