The period in history where recorded music was a primary source of income for artists is over. It didn't even last a hundred years. Music existed long before it, and shall continue to exist after. Relax.

Basically this. It was a very brief period, historically. And the music/movie industry is hanging on to that old model for dear life, but fact is it's already dead. They're just refusing to bury it.

Possibly because without actual products to sell, the entire record industry is in trouble... not that that's a bad thing. The record industry does a fairly limited amount of good for actual music.

This. This so much. Artists make a good chunk of their money thanks to ad sales nowadays. And music is much more easily produced these days, so it doesn't eat up even remotely the amount that it used to.
