I repeatedly watch the music videos on their VEVOs instead of buying mp3s. They're still making money off of youtube/their channels. Do you count giving video views as supporting the artist as well, or will only a cold hard cash transfer do?

Normally judging secrets are so wanky but... I agree. I do have serious money problems, and I go out of my way to buy my fandom's stuff - even the crappy stuff - because they're awesome and they put so much hard work into it, and I want to support them.

To be honest if you're a fan I don't understand why you wouldn't want to buy their stuff. Do people not even get the urge? Also it's the best way to indicate you want more of the same (kinda voting with your wallet).

The period in history where recorded music was a primary source of income for artists is over. It didn't even last a hundred years. Music existed long before it, and shall continue to exist after. Relax.

I only buy the music if I really fucking like it. Otherwise, I'll wait till it comes on the radio again or YouTube it. With YouTube, the bands get to see how many people are actually watching their official videos, so it's not like it's stealing money from them.

TL;DR: If it's not amazing, no, I'm not going to waste my money.

That's cool. I don't really care if people own the music or tv shows or movies of the fandoms they're in. If you listen to the music or watch the tv shows or hell, if you just enjoy the fandom without watching or listening then whatever. It's not a cool kids club with rules at the door, it's fandom. Fandom is for fun.

I agree with this for fandom things in general. Not that I expect people to go out and buy every single thing related to their favorite fandoms, but if you're really into something, I think it's important to buy merch, DVDs, books, albums, etc. As someone else in the thread said, it's a way to "vote for your wallet" and show that you appreciate what the creators you like are doing.

Obviously I'm not suggesting people skip buying food or other necessities, but if you're really a huge fan and you have disposable income I do think it's really important to try to buy at least a few things for your favorite stuff. (Or even if you don't, choosing to watching ad-supported legal videos on places like YouTube, Hulu and Crunchyroll instead of pirated stuff also works, when that's available.)

There are different ways to supports artists, and every artist is not the same wrt financial situations/management/etc. I do try to support indie artists or artists putting out their stuff on their own, but One Direction isn't going to suffer because I downloaded their album. I was totally happy to fork over cash for Florrie's latest, though.

Buying music is basically literally the very least effective way of supporting your artist for the record, unless they're almost entirely unknown or obscenely rich and successful anyway. Attending concerts, or hell just sending them directly the cash would be far better.

Also I know we're obsessed with the idea of monetary recompense for creative endeavours, but I don't see why that's necessarily a right, especially for something like music.

You'll be supporting the artist more directly if you do things like see them in concert, though. The vast, vast majority of the money from album sales goes to supporting the recording industry, which many people have (legitimate) ethical issues with and don't want to do (forcing artists to sign downright usurious contracts, etc.)

Me I always just donate directly through the artist's site, if possible, then download the music elsewhere for free.

But I must point that in some countries you can't even get most CDS/DVDS legally. They aren't released. Not everyone lives in the USA and this must be considered.

It became so much easier to buy fandom related stuff since I moved to Chicago...

I dunno, when I'm active in a music fandom it isn't cos I especially like their music. I can get most of the music I actually like free, I wouldn't change that pattern just cos I'm enjoying fic about a particular band. *shrug*

It's more lucrative for the band now when you actually purchase an album (versus 10 years ago) but they still make a bigger profit when you purchase their gear (tshirts, hoodies, etc). I tend to justify downloading an album or two for free by promising to purchase the music and/or at least a hat or something with their logo on it. It's free advertising for them, and pretty much pure profit in their pockets.

I've been burned too many times by buying an album for the 'radio song' and then hating the rest of the music.

I totally agree. There are lots of ways of organizing this, a levy on internet services to cover DL'ed content (everyone pays) actually buying music (consumer pays) a levy o Dl'ed content at the end of the month, I don't think we necessarily have to organise it in the traditional 'watch telly' or 'buy CD' model. But it's not beyond the pale to ask people to pay for something they enjoy. There are plenty of opportunities to sample music before purchase to you know you won't be getting a dog. But it's massively uncool to spend money on everything you love except art. What is wrong with people? And please, most fandom bands aren't living in mansions. You aren't taking another gold watch off Jon Bon Jovi here.

Also, even if you don't have extra spending money, but have internet access, you can listen to music on either official youtube pages or spotify.
