You'll be supporting the artist more directly if you do things like see them in concert, though. The vast, vast majority of the money from album sales goes to supporting the recording industry, which many people have (legitimate) ethical issues with and don't want to do (forcing artists to sign downright usurious contracts, etc.)

Me I always just donate directly through the artist's site, if possible, then download the music elsewhere for free.

Well aren't you special and more enlightened than all of us sheep.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Aryt didn't come across that way at all. Why are you so upset by what they said?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Your view =/= everyone's view. Clearly, they did come across that way, if that's how someone read it.

DA

Or someone was just butthurt and lashed out?

FIRST ANON: Queen Anne's Lace is white.
SECOND ANON: It's not purple! What the fuck is wrong with you?
THIRD ANON: They didn't say it was purple.
YOU: Your view =/= everyone's view. Clearly, they came across as if they said it was purple, if that's how someone read it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sense. This comment makes none.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea that "if someone read this a certain way, then that's the way it was" is completely ridiculous. It means that what Person A actually says is completely irrelevant and can be dismissed on the grounds that "I don't personally think that's what you said."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not "the way it is", it's the way that someone interpreted the words. Which is what allows for someone else to come along and read the same thing and interpret a different meaning. Communication on the internet is not black and white. No one's guaranteed to read an exact meaning into anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
And they way that someone "interprets" words can be incorrect. The fact that we're on the internet doesn't change that. It doesn't change the fact that, if you're reading something into a statement that isn't there, or if the point that you're deriving is completely off base, then you're wrong.

Oooooookaaaaaaaay.

You know that I'm far from the only person in this thread to point out that almost none of the money from an album/song sale, so if you really want to support an artist financially buying an album is one of the most useless things you can do, right?

So why does my comment come off as high and mighty while, say, ill_omened directly above me, saying exactly the same thing, doesn't?

It's just a statement of fact: artists make cents per album sale. You'd be better off downloading it from The Pirate Bay and PayPal'ing them a dollar. Or downloading a couple of albums and using what you saved to buy a concert ticket (artists take in about 20-40% of those). There's a reason that only bands that own the rights to their own material (like Metallica) seem to give a shit about piracy: it's because other artists make almost no money off of music sales. If you really love a band and really want to support the artist, buying their music is practically useless.

Except labels will look at the CD sales and will drop a band that doesn't sell enough of them (though they'll also look at how much money they get from merchandising also).

You can't cut off labels from the equation, unless the band has enough leverage to book tour and release their music without them. Not a lot of them can.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I am so sick of narrow minded idiots thinking that buying music is the best and/or only way to support an artist. I have spent an absolute fortune on merchanise and tickets for a particular band's album this year... so no, I don't feel guilty for foregoing £15 for the CD, when I've spent ten times that supporting the same album in other ways.

More, most of the artists I support make a point of actively endorsing things like tape trading and downloading because they know it gets their music out there and heard by people who otherwise wouldn't even listen to it at all. All it takes is for one person to hear a song for free when he had no intention of hearing it at all, and then buy a tee-shirt, and that's revenue the artist would never have ever had, courtesy of 'piracy'.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well hell, let's just fucking steal all the things then, right? I mean, it's for their own good. When all my friends see my shiny new plasma TV, they're gonna all run right out and buy their own, so it doesn't matter that I stole mine off a truck! I earned the store so much money, they should thank me!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Way to miss the point. Where at any point did I say that it was okay to steal everything? Or that it was for their own good. Pirating a piece of music and paying triple the amount it would have cost to support the album that music came from, and the artist who created it, is in no way "stealing all the things". Read what you're criticising before you jump on your soapbox.

Which, as stated, was endorsement by the artists themselves, stating why they are happy for tape trading and downloading of their work. Again, read the paragraph's opening sentence.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what? Are the artists themselves not allowed to give away their music for free because it upsets you? Because ayrt was referring to musicians who encourage people to pirate their music.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because those people are only going to pirate music from the artists who give their permission, and not like, everyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Way to speak for everyone who has ever downloaded anything, dude.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So you don't believe that artists should give their music away for free because it will encourage people to pirate songs from other musicians?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the artists figured, what the hell, people are going to steal it anyway so we might as well be cool about it and maybe that'll earn us points.

I think OP meant to say that if you're in a music fandom, support the bands you like financially. In some music fandoms (like, say, any band that doesn't tour regularly in the US/wherever you live) buying the album is actually the most reasonable and meaningful support that you can give.

If that's not the case for your band and/or fandom, that's awesome. But I don't think the OP really meant "BUY THE ALBUM OR YOU ARE A HORRIBLE FAN" so much as "Maybe it would be a good idea to actually support the creative endeavors that fuel your fandom. Just maybe."

There's a lot of magical thinking that goes on in fandom justifying all manner of shenanigans (i.e. piracy, creepy fan entitlement wrt artists/actors, willful breaking of the fourth wall) in the name of "It's okay because we love it!" that is just... Not really a thing.

seriously. I would happily fork out money to see a band I really like performing live, because I know they're really getting the money. I don't care about supporting recording labels.
Donating to the artist's site is actually a really good idea.

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-10-16 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I came here to say this. I know a lot of artists don't really give a shit about piracy because they know kids will still pay to go to show which is where the real money is. $35-$90 is a helluva lot more support to give than $10 for an album especially when much more of the revenue generated through ticket sales actually reaches the artist (although it certainly doesn't hurt to buy both if you can).
