Well aren't you special and more enlightened than all of us sheep.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Aryt didn't come across that way at all. Why are you so upset by what they said?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Your view =/= everyone's view. Clearly, they did come across that way, if that's how someone read it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Or someone was just butthurt and lashed out?

FIRST ANON: Queen Anne's Lace is white.
SECOND ANON: It's not purple! What the fuck is wrong with you?
THIRD ANON: They didn't say it was purple.
YOU: Your view =/= everyone's view. Clearly, they came across as if they said it was purple, if that's how someone read it.

Sense. This comment makes none.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea that "if someone read this a certain way, then that's the way it was" is completely ridiculous. It means that what Person A actually says is completely irrelevant and can be dismissed on the grounds that "I don't personally think that's what you said."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not "the way it is", it's the way that someone interpreted the words. Which is what allows for someone else to come along and read the same thing and interpret a different meaning. Communication on the internet is not black and white. No one's guaranteed to read an exact meaning into anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
And they way that someone "interprets" words can be incorrect. The fact that we're on the internet doesn't change that. It doesn't change the fact that, if you're reading something into a statement that isn't there, or if the point that you're deriving is completely off base, then you're wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Noo... I can't even. Wow.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So...individual interpretation is never wrong and is always above reproach, regardless of the source material?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooookaaaaaaaay.

You know that I'm far from the only person in this thread to point out that almost none of the money from an album/song sale, so if you really want to support an artist financially buying an album is one of the most useless things you can do, right?

So why does my comment come off as high and mighty while, say, ill_omened directly above me, saying exactly the same thing, doesn't?

It's just a statement of fact: artists make cents per album sale. You'd be better off downloading it from The Pirate Bay and PayPal'ing them a dollar. Or downloading a couple of albums and using what you saved to buy a concert ticket (artists take in about 20-40% of those). There's a reason that only bands that own the rights to their own material (like Metallica) seem to give a shit about piracy: it's because other artists make almost no money off of music sales. If you really love a band and really want to support the artist, buying their music is practically useless.

Except labels will look at the CD sales and will drop a band that doesn't sell enough of them (though they'll also look at how much money they get from merchandising also).

You can't cut off labels from the equation, unless the band has enough leverage to book tour and release their music without them. Not a lot of them can.
