I agree with the secret.

But I must point that in some countries you can't even get most CDS/DVDS legally. They aren't released. Not everyone lives in the USA and this must be considered.

It became so much easier to buy fandom related stuff since I moved to Chicago...

over here there are artist that you never get the cds unless you import them, yet they manage to come into concert... it's quite odd...

Heh, I remember when jrock or visual kei or whatever you want to call it became a thing here even though you could only get CDs/mech through imports. Still the bands came over for concerts!

CD sales are obvs not everything.

Here in Mexico that happens a lot with those bands, they come to Mexico City and on ocasion they bring some of their merch but that's it. If you want to get their stuff before or after you have to buy it on cdjapan or stuff.

Yeeeeeeah even though I'm in the US, I find this issue often being an anime fan. You just can't get opening and ending themes here, except through secluded internet stores that charge you upwards of 40$ for two songs.

So overall, I agree with the OP, but some things just don't come out in some countries.
