If you can't afford to pay for music, you can't afford to listen to more than the radio and background music. These people work for a living; how long do you think the money's going to last if everyone's downloading illegally?

You do realize, that even in the time of just radio, people (by which I mean old timers like me) would tape music on cassettes and listen to it, and no-one was boo-hooing about copyright then.

I realize it was on a much smaller scale, and there was a lot of quality loss compared to now - but in pretty much every time period people were listening to music they weren't paying for. And like now, people still did buy the things they were really invested in.

Oh, people were boo-hooing about copyright then, too. People have been boo-hooing about how music piracy kills musicians since before copyright existed - remind me to show you my collection of pirated sheet music sometime - and yet somehow musicians and producers keep eating and making more money and getting obscenely rich.

Actually that is a fairly recent mindset. No-one really considered it a dickish move back then. It's just what kids did.

Do you consider saving a film on a videotape or DVD a dickish move, too?

Before the advennt of the internet though. Those kids wouldn't then make a few hundred copies and distribute them.

Which is why music stores and video shops are closing down so much today. Everybody forgets about those.

Yup, before the Internet. Without the Internet, the discussion wouldn't exist. Well that, and digital carriers like mp3. Which have only existed for a heartbeat, historically seen, and publishers have no idea to deal with the new technology, basically. And they are retroactively trying to make up laws to protect themselves.

The thing about video shops - they not so much disappeared as evolved into other media, like pay TV.

I'm not saying they collapsed solely by downloading. But that sure fucking helped And they are a testament to the idea of "oh like the rich artists are hurt" excuse not really holding up.

But what are you arguing then, that we should artificially sustain outdated media, and outdated ways of distributing it?

I loved video stores. I hate to see them go. But if I'm honest, I wasn't using them anymore (even before I started downloading things).

Yes, the video stores workers are out of a job and that sucks - but there are other jobs that have historically disappeared. You don't see that many blacksmiths anymore, either. You can't really stop that from happening - at best, you're stalling.

Really? I see my blacksmith every 7 weeks to shoe my horse, his job title is just "Farrier" or "shoer" instead of the dated phrase 'blacksmith.'

Same job, just different title. :)

Sure, but that's part of my point. Your "farrier" is to a blacksmith what pay TV/legal downloads are to video stores. But your farrier is probably not making battle armor or swords anymore (unless he's a very specialized person who makes things for medieval re-enactment).

So no, sorry. Just because the Internet makes it easier it doesn't mean before it was so "small".

Oh, and what about real piracy? Illegal copies being sold has been a (real) problem since long before the Internet and for some reason, that's less attacked than on-line sharing. Because people selling piracy pay bribes and we don't?

Are you still talking about tape recordings? Because those got real shitty real fast when you were making copies of copies of copies. There's only so big such an "operation" could get compared to digital distribution.

Music stores and video shops most likely would have gone by the wayside, anyway. A good portion of people who obtain music and video legally nowadays purchase it through the internet rather than at a brick-and-mortar.

As technology advances, so do the means of distribution. It's sad, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Hell, I have a few storage boxes of VHS tapes in my basement consisting entirely of stuff I taped off TV. That was just what you did back then: if a show you wanted to see was on, you taped it.

The money will last, just not in the recorded medium. Recordings are dirt cheap to produce compared with fifty years ago. They're so dirt cheap that, with a bit of juggling, soon musicians are going to be able to give them away for free-- not as products in and of themselves, but as advertisements, as enticements to come to live shows and to spread the word of the artist's music and buy tickets and merchendise and thisgs that do make the artist money.
