And if you're in a music fandom where the artists are already ridiculously wealthy?

Sorry, I'm going to buy food and toilet paper and dish soap instead of helping them pay for a bigger mansion.
I don't care if that makes me a "true" fan or not.

They're being wealthy doesn't mean shit. Stop thinking you deserve shit you don't.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying I "deserve" anything. Rather that I don't give a fuck about boohoohoo their poor lack of a few extra dollars out of my wallet.

I see classim used more for excusing behavior then anything. Here included.

The fact they do or don't already have money doesn't change what they "deserve" which is to not have a product they put out not paid for just because of bullshit whining reasons.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Classim"?

hahahaha. Yeah, because those millionaires are so oppressed. Please don't use terms you have no idea about.

Legally no, ethically it's hugely important depending on what value system you ascribe to.

Then again, wat r theory of diminishing marginal utility.

apparently lost on the "but you wouldn't steal an ipod!1" people.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
you're not entitled to free music, sorry bro

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can't afford to pay for music, you can't afford to listen to more than the radio and background music. These people work for a living; how long do you think the money's going to last if everyone's downloading illegally?
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2012-10-14 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize, that even in the time of just radio, people (by which I mean old timers like me) would tape music on cassettes and listen to it, and no-one was boo-hooing about copyright then.

I realize it was on a much smaller scale, and there was a lot of quality loss compared to now - but in pretty much every time period people were listening to music they weren't paying for. And like now, people still did buy the things they were really invested in.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, people were boo-hooing about copyright then, too. People have been boo-hooing about how music piracy kills musicians since before copyright existed - remind me to show you my collection of pirated sheet music sometime - and yet somehow musicians and producers keep eating and making more money and getting obscenely rich.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still a dickish thing to do.
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2012-10-14 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually that is a fairly recent mindset. No-one really considered it a dickish move back then. It's just what kids did.

Do you consider saving a film on a videotape or DVD a dickish move, too?

The money will last, just not in the recorded medium. Recordings are dirt cheap to produce compared with fifty years ago. They're so dirt cheap that, with a bit of juggling, soon musicians are going to be able to give them away for free-- not as products in and of themselves, but as advertisements, as enticements to come to live shows and to spread the word of the artist's music and buy tickets and merchendise and thisgs that do make the artist money.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Because OP was totally talking about skipping necessities in order to buy music. (I don't care what anyone else thinks, nothing from Starbucks is a necessity).

The secret gives a concession for "serious money problems." It's talking about people who have plenty of extra cash but choose to pirate anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That logic is...kind of stupid. It's like "hey, why don't I steal this shit from walmart? That company makes a fuckton of money anyway. maybe I'll take this iphone too, it's not like Apple is hurting for cash"

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And somehow it doesn't hold up in a court of law.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

ikr, isn't that crazy??

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Except if I steal shit from WalMart they have one less item in their inventory, but if I download something, they still have what I downloaded?

It's not a moral argument, but you can't actually equate the two arguments. It's not like stealing a car, sry2say.

DA

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not exactly like stealing a car, but it's still theft.

Even if they technically still have what you downloaded because of the way copying works, you still didn't pay for something you were supposed to pay for.

Oh, and by the way, this is coming from another pirate.

It's theft oh?

Where's the permanent intent to deprive?

True. Walmart would have one less item to sell. But if you share your pirated download with 30 of your friends online (and let's be real - everyone does) - then you've cost them 31 sales. And then your friends each share with their friends.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's only if you assume that every friend would have bought the album if they hadn't downloaded it illegally. Newsflash: they wouldn't have.

(I'm not saying that makes illegal downloading okay, mind you, just that you're greatly overestimating the number of lost sales.)

I don't think it actually deprives them of sales, though. If someone gives me a link or a cd they've burned I probably wouldn't have heard of the artist to begin with, so I wouldn't have been giving them money. If I could only get music by directly paying for it, I just wouldn't have that much music at all, especially the top 40s pop stuff. There is no loss of sale going on there at all.
