It's more lucrative for the band now when you actually purchase an album (versus 10 years ago) but they still make a bigger profit when you purchase their gear (tshirts, hoodies, etc). I tend to justify downloading an album or two for free by promising to purchase the music and/or at least a hat or something with their logo on it. It's free advertising for them, and pretty much pure profit in their pockets.

I've been burned too many times by buying an album for the 'radio song' and then hating the rest of the music.
