Whitewashing in the Motorcity fandom? What's going on? Is it the black chick or who...?

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2012-10-14 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. It's the main character, Mike Chilton. According to the creators of the show Mike is a "mutt" (their words not mine). His ethnicity hasn't been determined, but he's brown skinned. Not tanned, but actually brown.

The MC fandom on tumblr is getting into a tizzy about artists not coloring him dark enough. Which makes sense when people's finished art portrays him as a pale Caucasian, but the majority of the complaints are about unfinished sketches that aren't properly shaded to convey skintone.

So....by THEIR logic, a sketch I have Tiana in a sailor fuku/sailor senshi outfit based on her dress, I'd be OMG SO RACIST because I just happened to NOT shade in anything, including her skin, despite her being recognizably TIANA?

*sigh* Seriously? Their getting shitty of unfinished, un-shaded sketches?

Yeeeup :|

That's right up there with the Legend of Korra fandom getting in a twist about whitewashing because of someone's art of Korra bending fire showed her as "white" when in reality is was the light source from the fire that made her skin look brighter. Thanks to SJW's failure to grasp basic art knowledge they thought it was a good enough reason to hound the artist into redoing the pic to make her darker, then continue to harass the artist and send them death threats.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-10-14 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember that. -_-

They ALSO don't take into consideration that each computer screen has a different brightness/contrast output. So on the artist's computer, she could be the brown she's supposed to be, but on another, she's lighter and then that artist gets hounded.

There's A LOT of things to take into consideration, especially if the artist is expressing a lot of confusion over perceived "white washing" when they had her drawn/colored right. Or, in the case of the unfortunate artist mentioned, LIGHT SOURCE.

*sigh*

It's damn good to be aware, people, but there's a line and you've crossed it. (general you)

Ha! I just posted about different screen contrasts before I read this. Seriously, my laptop and desktop are proof of how different screen calibrations can be.

Ugh this!! My bf's desktop has two monitors right? THEY are vastly different, on top of our laptops. So, 4 screens showcase contrasts differently.

And then, don;t get me started on doing graphic design work in school, going between a PC laptop and a an iMac. The difference ALWAYS came up and I had to change shit before printing.

Do you have a link to that Korra picture? Because I've heard so much about the wank surrounding it, but have never actually seen the pic.

WOAH

Just looking at some of the responses on that first pic, that is some SERIOUS wank.

And looking at the rest of her art, it's pretty clear that whitewashing is not what is occurring there.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, I remember when someone showed them actually screencaps of Korra in the light vs. the dark as evidence of this, and that the SJWs concluded that Korra was being white-washed by her own show. LOL

[personal profile] edgelakanth 2012-10-15 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
More like "If you sketch a POC character on WHITE paper IS Whitewashing".
hallokatzchen: (Default)

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2012-10-15 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
brb. Tea-staining all my sketchpads to comply with the anti-whitewash standards and practices.

[personal profile] edgelakanth 2012-10-15 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Make sure in make a lot of these so you can cover ALL the skin tones or else you are going to whitewash a character with dark skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Mike doesn't look like any particular ethnicity though. I assumed he was a generic white dude and didn't take note of his skin tone at all until the "mutt-ness" got pointed out to me.

Honestly though I'm sick of all the whitewashing accusations when it's clear that none of the fanartists do it on purpose let alone have some kind of inherent dislike of darker skin. Misjudging of color happens all the time in fanart, it's not limited to skin.
hallokatzchen: (Default)

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2012-10-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! If the artist isn't blatantly reworking a dark skinned character into a blonde, blue eyed Aryan, then there shouldn't be a problem. Plus people have to take into consideration that not everyone's monitors have the calibrations, so what looks dark on one screen will look light on another no matter how much you use the eyedropper tool.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"the majority of the complaints are about unfinished sketches that aren't properly shaded to convey skintone"

Uh no that was one troll blog that tried to stop any dialogue from happening about white washing. All of the other complaints were on finished drawings.
hallokatzchen: (Default)

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2012-10-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
So whitewashedmotorcitizens really is a troll blog, huh? Because that's the only one I know of that wanted people to shade their sketches.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've still seen someone legitimately complain that using white paper is racist because paper used to be brown. As well as a few saying people "color the character's hair black but don't shade their skin" are white washing.

So you're saying if I sketched a character with all the racial markers for a race if I didn't color it in it's white washing?

I know it's just a handful of people that think that but I have never facepalmed so hard in my life.

"So you're saying if I sketched a character with all the racial markers for a race if I didn't color it in it's white washing?"

That's the current tumblr logic (if you can even call it logic) going around, yes. I'm pretty sure I dented my face with my palm when I heard of it.
