'PoC' bothers me a bit. It lumps every non-white coloring together, and we're thrown back to the 'two opposing groups' view of ethnicity.

Plus, pink is a color.

Yeah, PoC seemed to me to still continue the 'us vs them' mentality that I thought we were all trying to get away from.

While it's none of my business what any individual person calls themselves, it does seem strange to coin a term that does nothing more than lump every 'non-caucasian' person into an 'other' grouping, which seems to defeat the purpose entirely...

I've always wondered what qualifies you to be a POC? Because I am half Puerto Rican. And on paper that would make me a POC but if you looked at me with my pale skin and Irish features, which is my other side, you would never qualify me as a POC. Is it just looks? Because I've also had people suddenly call me a "Spic" and treat me different once they learned I was half Puerto Rican. But, again, if I had not volunteered that information no one would think of it seeing I don't fit the stereotype.

Or how about Wentworth Miller?


Would you consider him a POC because he is a mixture of Black, Jamaican, Jewish, Cherokee, Syrian, Lebanese along with English, German, Dutch and Russian or would you not label him as one because he's pale with blue eyes?

I don't know, either. I'm also confused about why you're considered multiethnic if you're Japanese, Chinese, and Thai but not if you're Italian, German, and Romanian. I guess all white people are the same ethnicity.

Whitewashing in the Motorcity fandom? What's going on? Is it the black chick or who...?

Nope. It's the main character, Mike Chilton. According to the creators of the show Mike is a "mutt" (their words not mine). His ethnicity hasn't been determined, but he's brown skinned. Not tanned, but actually brown.

The MC fandom on tumblr is getting into a tizzy about artists not coloring him dark enough. Which makes sense when people's finished art portrays him as a pale Caucasian, but the majority of the complaints are about unfinished sketches that aren't properly shaded to convey skintone.

Yeah, I sometimes sort of feel that the SJW heavy emphasis on race does little to erase actual racism. I have no problems with being proud of your heritage or being pleased when shows have characters that aren't just white, but being quick to verbally lash out at someone for making a mistake or degrading someone because they're white doesn't seem like a great way to solve issues or convert people over to your cause.

Although admittedly I'm white--my ancestors are pretty much all from somewhere in Britain, besides a little bit of Native American--so I'm sure I don't handle race stuff all that well, either...?

People have the right to point out whitewashing regardless of how small the fandom is. The anti-whitewashing places I see only point it out so it can be fixed or avoided in future works.

Fun fact: I did see one "white-washed" fanart in an anti-whitewashing Motorcity blog that was just lineart. Not gray-scale or even filled-in black, just lines. That was really dumb of them.

I don't like POC either, but it is a bit more tasteful that saying "non-white people" or something when that's what you're talking about. Besides, you end up grouping people at some point. Even if you don't say POC, you may just refer to Asians or Middle-Easterners or w/e, which I've seen offend people because it lumps their cultures with all the other cultures of that area. And when you're not referring to a specific person and their ethnicity, you're gonna piss someone off.

If you hate POC, what's your idea for what people should say if they're referring to, say, all people who aren't white in America?

I'm Asian, and I grit my teeth every time someone calls me a PoC. Am I crayon? No? Then why the fuck would you call me a "person of color." It makes me think of crayons.

Which I get is a really stupid reason to hate the term, but seriously? Please, just call me Asian. It's not actually offensive to call me by what I am.

Maybe you should think that people who are whitewashing are making fandom hard to enjoy for people who are usually at the ass end of that? I mean, it sucks when people lighten characters for no good reason. That "POC stuff" may not effect you (and it's not like being POC automatically means that whitewashing affects you anyways considering shadeism is usually committed in POC cultures as well, but in the end, it's a pretty fucked up thing to do), but not everyone is you and they shouldn't be.

Plus the fandom looks pretty fucking dandy to me according to my friends who are not into the "SJW" scene or whatever thing you want it to be.

And, can we not do the whole thing that White people can experience racism because they really don't? Prejudice? Yes. Xenophobia? Yes. But not racism. If White people are usually discriminated against, it's usually because not of their race but they are foreigners or it's animosity for what bullshit White people historically done and continue to benefit from.

And stop confusing ethnocentrism/nationalism with racism. German or Polish is not a race, or is a really a ethnicity since both countries have many ethnicities, it's a nationality.

If you don't want to use POC, fine. But I will continue to use it when I am talking when talking about race domestically and internationally because, like or not, white imperialism affected a lot of dynamics of today's world whether it's stereotyping/colonization that Africa suffers from or the root of Japan or China's xenophobia and fight to hold on to some traditions and beliefs so they won't lose their identity in midst of Westernization via globalization to keep up with the (usually White) Western powers (and how they are usually ignored [Japan] or vilified [China]).

(inb4 someone come and say 'BUT THEY THINK THEY ARE THE BEST AND CENTER OF THE WORLD', a good number of people in every ethnicity think they are the shit whether they admit it or not, it's part of human behavior [whether that's a good thing is another issue] or stuff like the World Cup or the Olympics wouldn't be so popular. Trust. But that doesn't mean anything if the on the international stage, which has the biggest influence on a nation, they are marginalized even if they live in a mostly POC country. It might not be obvious on the scale say some African countries who are overwhelmingly Black Africans similar to China and Japan but it does exist.)

"PoC" is insufficient to me, too, because the wider world doesn't work that way, but I default to it or "minority" to lampshade the shit that goes on in most media in my own white-majority country in particular, which hardly ever reflects the real-life demographics of whatever local setting is being used. My brain starts making note of any prominent character who is not of the majority, and trying to find ways to group the appearance of such uncommon characters. It plays into the same separatism that started the whole mess, but I'm not sure how to work outside the system without pretending I don't see what's already happening.

This is what drives a lot of the grosser SJW behavior, I think: Not knowing how to retaliate against insidious separatism without duplicating it just as viciously. (Just ignoring it all is useless, as well, because then you default to whatever prejudices were ingrained in you.)

But honestly, I loathe whitewashing. I don't yell at anyone, I just seethe and despair that dark skin is so widely reviled and automatically diminished, far beyond just Western white people.
