I've always wondered what qualifies you to be a POC? Because I am half Puerto Rican. And on paper that would make me a POC but if you looked at me with my pale skin and Irish features, which is my other side, you would never qualify me as a POC. Is it just looks? Because I've also had people suddenly call me a "Spic" and treat me different once they learned I was half Puerto Rican. But, again, if I had not volunteered that information no one would think of it seeing I don't fit the stereotype.

Or how about Wentworth Miller?


Would you consider him a POC because he is a mixture of Black, Jamaican, Jewish, Cherokee, Syrian, Lebanese along with English, German, Dutch and Russian or would you not label him as one because he's pale with blue eyes?

I'd probably consider him to be mixed race. And, wow, he's gorgeous.

Yes, but mixed races covers so many things. For every mixed kid like myself or Wentworth, there is;

Danny Pudi (Indian/Polish. But identifies more with the Polish side since that was the culture he was raised in. Even speaks Polish.)

Richard Ayoade (Nigerian/Norwegian)


Obviously, the two above would be considered POCs but, again, how about Wentworth? Does it really boil down to looks if someone is a POC on paper but doesn't look it in real life?

Thing is, if Wentworth counts as mixed race, so do I. And I'm about similarly pale. I think there are two different things in play here. One is personal identity, and that's different for everyone. I don't know this Danny Pudi guy well - but let's assume his personal identity is mixed-but-leaning-to-Polish. Which is fair enough. My personal identity is also culturally mixed (but also leaning more to my Eastern European side).

However, there is also they way you are perceived, and that's a different matter. So the funny thing is, that on an emotional level, me and this Danny guy might have a relatively similar sense of personal identity.

However, in practice, he will be perceived a racially mixed and I won't - he might face racism, and I won't. He might face discrimination at first glance, while I might only face it if I specifically choose not to speak the language of the land. And that does make a difference.

For some things, sadly, it does boil down to looks. And in mixed families, you might even have siblings that are perceived in different ways. I think that's a reality that no-one has a clean cut answer for.

Unfortunately, my fight with the SJWs was a little over a year ago. I used to be one of them, but then I got into a big row with them and have since denounced everything the stand for. And even if I could find the link, I'd be reluctant to give it as I was using my account when the wank happened, and I'd rather not de-anon myself. :( Especially since the drama trickled into my RL and now two-sides of the family hate each other, but that's another story.

However, if you just hop over to ontd_political or ontd_feminism, it shouldn't be too hard to people saying these kinds of things. It's more or less a never-ending train of wank (at least it was when I was there), so if you like that kind of thing, I highly recommend them.

I've also heard people use the term "white-appearing", which is also pretty shitty, imo. Especially since that term is typically thrown around when someone breaks into a SJW rant about a "white" person to point out that they're actually mixed-race.

And sorry that people have said that kind of stuff to you. That's crappy. :/

I am literally speechless. Although, really, I shouldn't be surprised.

I have about the same proportions (but different mixture) as the pale guy mentioned upthread. I do consider myself (and have always been treated as) white, though being a PWD, I have more than enough firsthand experience with being in a minority group that, yeah, I'm privileged in one small respect.

Go far enough back in your own genealogy and EVERYONE'S "mixed" in some sense. Tell that to the SJWs who say such things, nonny. That won't shut them up, but it will get others reading to think. (Maybe.)

I don't know, either. I'm also confused about why you're considered multiethnic if you're Japanese, Chinese, and Thai but not if you're Italian, German, and Romanian. I guess all white people are the same ethnicity.

because according to the crazies if your skin is pale then you're just a big mean oppressive meany and it doesn't matter where you or your ancestors came from or what their history entails because the color of your skin is totes more important than the content of your character. Or your ethnic history. But if your skin is pale then we don't need to hear about your history because all it MUST be is oppressing darker skinned people. It's fascinating to see this logic applied to Jews now that we're officially considered white for whatever reason.

I'm honestly so confused by all of it. I have seven separate ethnicities in my background from all over Europe (but I speak German, so most people assume I'm full blood that until they hear that I have an Italian surname and then they assume I'm full blood that because people are stupid) but, because I'm white, I'm not considered multiethnic whereas someone who's half and half of anything else is? I don't get it.

There is a huge trend in the US to assume that Jewish= Ashkenazi Jew and that Ashkenazi Jews are 100% white. It's really stupid. But what do I know? I'm white, so I must be an ignorant, culture-less oppressor.

Oh, the other thing that annoys me? Anglo. I really hate that term. I'm not English. I'm Scottish, Welsh, and Irish on different sides, but I'm not English.

yeah the fact that Jews don't count as a minority, much less as one that has/still does face oppression is pretty gross. It depends on where you live. In a lot of Europe you probably would be considered multi ethnic if your Italian/German/Romanian. I just think the whole American melting pot sort of skewed the perception on that.

Which is why I'm confused how a Japanese/Chinese/Thai person can be considered multiethnic in the US but a white person of multiple ethnicities cannot.
