I don't know, either. I'm also confused about why you're considered multiethnic if you're Japanese, Chinese, and Thai but not if you're Italian, German, and Romanian. I guess all white people are the same ethnicity.

because according to the crazies if your skin is pale then you're just a big mean oppressive meany and it doesn't matter where you or your ancestors came from or what their history entails because the color of your skin is totes more important than the content of your character. Or your ethnic history. But if your skin is pale then we don't need to hear about your history because all it MUST be is oppressing darker skinned people. It's fascinating to see this logic applied to Jews now that we're officially considered white for whatever reason.

I'm honestly so confused by all of it. I have seven separate ethnicities in my background from all over Europe (but I speak German, so most people assume I'm full blood that until they hear that I have an Italian surname and then they assume I'm full blood that because people are stupid) but, because I'm white, I'm not considered multiethnic whereas someone who's half and half of anything else is? I don't get it.

There is a huge trend in the US to assume that Jewish= Ashkenazi Jew and that Ashkenazi Jews are 100% white. It's really stupid. But what do I know? I'm white, so I must be an ignorant, culture-less oppressor.

Oh, the other thing that annoys me? Anglo. I really hate that term. I'm not English. I'm Scottish, Welsh, and Irish on different sides, but I'm not English.

I find it really hilarious, in a profoundly depressing way, that these people will look at a medium/light skinned Jew and call "ZOMG WHITE PRIVALAG" but will look at a person of Arab descent with the EXACT SAME skin tone (and sometimes with facial features that are indistinguishable from Jewish features) and be all "OPPRESSED POC." Especially when they know literally nothing about either person's life.

Okay, if you're Jewish, this is really not wank you want to start. Let's just say skin color is not a good sign of privilege and leave it at that.

yeah the fact that Jews don't count as a minority, much less as one that has/still does face oppression is pretty gross. And just goes to show how little SJWs actually understand about... well, anything, to be honest. It's all just teens and pre-teens seeing who can scream the loudest about being offended, though, so at least we are free to ignore them.

The worst part---well, the two worst parts---are: a) the way some of them will do the "Israeli = Jew = Israeli so all Jews are terrible people" thing and will deny that they're doing it while they do (you can usually tell this type by the way they go "Zionist" this and "Zionist" that, and by how they say "Israeli" as a clear euphemism for "Jew" in their ranting; and b) the way that, since we're now unilaterally "white," any and all complaints about past ill-treatment are considered void and any attempts to use them as an example of how we have NOT been privileged throughout history gets us called whiners and told to get over it. I've actually seen people tell someone who mentioned the Holocaust that they were "overreacting" and that "Jews have been using that as an excuse for way too long." MULTIPLE TIMES IN DIFFERENT PLACES.

I guess they also don't comprehend that Jewish as religion =/= Jewish as ethnicity, right?

Are you sure people aren't honestly ranting about Israelis, though? Because there's a whole mess of reasons not to like or have sympathy for Israelis.

Zionist has been turned into as much a hot button word as Islamist, although neither are particularly harmful or threatening to the world at large when it really comes down to it.

Oh believe me you can TELL with these people. Also, I take issue with the idea that every Israeli citizen (well, let's be honest here and say Every Jewish Israeli citizen, because a lot of people like to conveniently forget that there are other ethnicities living there as citizens) is an evil person who deserves bad things.

It depends on where you live. In a lot of Europe you probably would be considered multi ethnic if your Italian/German/Romanian. I just think the whole American melting pot sort of skewed the perception on that.

Which is why I'm confused how a Japanese/Chinese/Thai person can be considered multiethnic in the US but a white person of multiple ethnicities cannot.

I am totally pulling this out of my ass, but I'd suuuuspect that it goes back to colonial times, where you had a bunch of Europeans of different ethnicities on the one hand, and a bunch of Native American locals of various ethnicities on the other. So you had these two groups who, yes, each were actually of different ethicities, but the over-riding group of "us" and "them" were the aboriginals on the one hand, and the European settlers on the other. And when the locals were hostile, it didn't matter if the white guy was Dutch or German or English or Scottish or what; they were white and the other guys were not. So things got sorted very much along the lines of skin colour.

And then, for the longest time, what you mostly had was white people in positions of power over non-whites, who would mostly have been either aboriginals or slaves, so that white/non-white thing was perpetuated. And so (unless you were Irish at the turn of the 19th century, or Italian, depending on where you lived) it didn't matter whether you were half English and half German (as I am); you were white and from that place over there, Europe.

So as soon as you define "ethnic" as a synonym for "not-white", then you get this thing where if you're of multiple not-white extractions, then you're multi-ethnic, but if you're of multi-European extractions, then you're still European and white and that's it.

Which makes me wonder why that hypothetical person who is Japanese/Chinese/Thai isn't just considered "Asian", especially in North America, where I think most of us aren't really familiar with any tensions between those countries (which might result in the person being considered more "multi-ethnic" if they were in one of those particular countries) and any differences in the cultures mostly break down to "Do we want Chinese, Thai, or sushi for dinner?"

May I say, though, that I think it's awesome that most of the grocery stores I've seen here in Canada with an "Ethnic" food section include German and English sections as well as the Chinese, Japanese, East Indian, and whatever else sections.

Yeah, exactly. In most parts of Europe I've visitted people don't really think by "race" as americans seem to do and more by nationality. Which makes sense.

Yeah... especially in Germany, "race" is a very, very bad word.

I'm guessing you're making a joke and don't have a real concept of the current German understanding? The actual word race may not be used much, but black, white, and brown are commonly used terms, as is Turk.

I have a perfect understanding of the word. Maybe you don't? As far as I'm aware, Rasse isn't a good word to throw around - Rassenlehre is something that's really a bit outdated, wouldn't you think? Plus, it's incorrect. I never said anything about the other words you mentioned. And even though black and white are used (brown, I rarely, if ever, hear), Turk is something altogether different, considering that would be an ethnicity and not a "race".
