I agree that people should avoid going places where the fandom is located until they're caught up (that's what I do unless I don't care about spoilers), but there's always some asshole on facebook or on here or something who takes it upon themselves to spoil things as soon as possible without any warning.

Twitter is also bad. I've had to unfollow people who are far too into liveblogging everything they watch and spoiling big things (although, liveblogging is annoying as shit anyway, even without spoilers). I've also been spoiled for things at completely unrelated fandom communities, which was doubly annoying because I totally wasn't expecting it.
