I have zero sympathy for someone who remains engaged with online fandom and show news during a spoiler period, the same way I have no sympathy for someone with severe allergies who devours the food they are allergic to.

Hint, get offline until it's safe to go back. Your control-freak martyrdom is just dumb and easily avoidable.

Self-fulfilling prophecies are self-fulfilling. Suck it up.

I'm torn on this. I hate being spoiled. That said, like the above commenter said, if you don't want to know it, don't go where you'll be spoiled.

But if someone comes up to me and, on purpose, after I have expressed my request to not be spoiled, tells me everything, you bet your fucking ass that I'm going to be pissed off at them.

I can still enjoy a show knowing what happens, but for me, half of my enjoyment is in the rush of emotions of surprise, shock, and anticipation. Taking those away because you get a kick out of telling someone being spoiled is stupid is just as stuck up and mean.

I don't mind spoilers personally, but it's really not hard to show some basic consideration and give spoiler warnings for those who do. For some, finding out what happens as they watch it instead of knowing beforehand is a big part of enjoying the experience.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
While I agree with people that if you don't want to be spoiled, do your best to avoid places where you know spoilers will be floating around, I don't agree with "if having something spoiled ruins it for you, you must not have loved it that much to begin with!"

I don't like knowing how things end, not because I 'don't love it enough', but because it takes away mystery and guessing and fun from the episode (or movie). After all, if someone comes up to you and gives you the ending to a mystery movie or horror film, you're going to watch it now, knowing what happens and be able to see all the hints and nudges that are written in to guide you in that direction.

To me that takes all the fun out of watching something and being surprised by every twist and turn (in something well written).

On the one hand I understand that I've got a much higher tolerance for spoilers then most people, so I try and respect that. But on the other, if I have squee for an upcoming guest star on a show that's four years old that you've just started watching a month ago, and you get pissed with me for "spoiling" you, I think you need to let it go.

It's not like I can't still enjoy it, it just really sucks getting spoiled sometimes. I can just say "sometimes it happens" instead of ragequitting the internet, though, and there have been occasions where it felt like a good thing that I got spoiled.

I'm not really that upset about spoilers, but my main fandoms tend to be RPGs, so part of the medium is the players having to find out for themselves what happens next, and spoilers do kind of mar the experience.

I generally try to steer clear of spoilers, but I also try not to get too upset if I run into one. It's the Internet, these things happen.

It's not that being spoiled ruins something, it ruins that first initial rush of not knowing and anticipating and wildly guessing when you see a particular movie/episode or read a particular book, being led and fooled and wonderfully manipulated by the writers revealing plot points in the order they intended rather than the order you were spoiled in. The experience of that first initial reaction does, in fact, often color your later viewings/readings, even if you enjoy the rewatchings/rereading just as much or more than your first one.

That being said, yeah, if you go into fandom spaces and expect not to be spoiled, you're kind of a moron. It is nice when people leave spoiler tags and stuff, but they don't exactly have an obligation to keep their discussion under wraps solely for other peoples' benefit.

I don't care about little things, but for big game-changing things that only recently happened? I really don't think it's too much to ask to put a warning of some kind. Having had people I (used to) watch on tumblr post spoilery gifsets of things that aired that night and then go "oh, well it's my blog I do what I want" when politely asked to tag it with "spoilers" is fucking annoying. I mean, is it really that difficult to do? Spoilers. boom, took two seconds and tumblr saviour would have gotten that shit and everybody would be happy. Maybe it's the Canadian in me that doesn't see how people can be that inconsiderate, idk.

I'm not someone that cares all that much about spoilers, but if someone enjoys something without spoilers and they're making an effort to avoid them then why should I care? Everyone enjoys things differently, so I think it's extremely stupid of you to act as though someone who enjoys a show differently than you doesn't actually enjoy it.

Why would I want to know what happens in a show/movie if I'm gonna watch it? I want to find out things for myself.
I'm not saying I can't enjoy a spoiled show/movie/book/whatever, but I'll probably go "meh, I already knew that was gonna happen, how boring".

I don't like feeling apathetic, I like to be entertained.

Eh. Spoilers piss me off because the whole time I will wonder "When will [spoiled thing] happen?". It takes me out of the experience because I will not take things as they are.

Also, yeah, sometimes I don't have any particular feelings towards something to begin with and hope to develop some :P

My brother informed me that Aeris died 0.5 minutes after I learned they were making a new Final Fantasy. It didn't ruin my enjoyment of the game but it definitely tainted something that was supposed to be a shocking reveal.

See....here's where I get pissed at insensitive jack asses when it comes to spoilers.

Take Korra. I didn't want to be spoiled on it cause I usually never saw the episode until the day after as I didn't have cable, so I had to either download it or wait until I was at the bf's place and we;d find a stream. So, on Tumblr, I put ALL WORDS I could come up with re:Korra spoilers (character names, ship names, 'korra spoilers,' what the fuck ever) into the black list on Tumblr Savior, so I wouldn't come across them when I was on my dashboard.

Simple right?

NOPE.

Apparently to those jack asses, it just "took soooooooo looooooong" to type a 2 second word or something into the fucking tag box when they were squee vomiting all about the episode that day. Or it took SOOOOOOO LOOOOOONG to make the post, then click on "Read More" in the fucking editor thingy.

Plain and simple, they were too fucking lazy and didn't fucking care to tag their shit. And if it was someone I was following who pulled that crap, I unfollowed their asses. They probably didn't care, but I at least felt better getting their insensitive asses off my dash.

Seriously, is it THAT FUCKING HARD type "korra" "korra spoilers" into the box?! Or for whatever other show is going on?! It took me less than 5 seconds to type that!!

Have some fucking tact and sensitivity for others who miss the episode due to time zones/being in other countries/something goes wrong in life/etc.

NOT. THAT. HARD.

FUCK.

I agree that people should avoid going places where the fandom is located until they're caught up (that's what I do unless I don't care about spoilers), but there's always some asshole on facebook or on here or something who takes it upon themselves to spoil things as soon as possible without any warning.

Plot twists and suspense don't work correctly if the reader/viewer knows what's coming. The author intends for a reveal or a twist to have a certain emotional impact; spoilers mitigate this impact.

It's not about whether one enjoys the source material. It's about whether one enjoys the thrill of being surprised, and whether one wants to experience the story the way it was meant to be experienced.

I don't mind spoilers. I don't see how that means I like the show better than people who do. Some people don't like them and I respect that. Putting things behind a spoiler cut is not going to kill you.

It's just common courtesy to warn for spoilers.

SPOILERS ARE LOVE

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I love spoilers. I actually read an article somewhere that said a certain percentage of people enjoy something more when they already know the end, and I know that I'm one of them.

When I don't know the ending, it stresses me out. I often record new episodes of shows I like and watch them the day after with a synopsis open on my computer. When I know for sure that the movie has a happy ending, it lets me relax and truly enjoy what I'm watching. When I know beforehand that it has a sad or tragic ending, then I can emotionally gird myself so I don't get overwhelmed.

Obviously I don't spoil myself for mysteries, because that completely defeats the purpose. As a result, I don't watch many mysteries, because like I said, I get completely stressed out. I have general anxiety issues, so it really helps to not get worried about whether or not the ending of whatever book/movie/episode is going to punch me in the gut with sadness or freak me out with a massive cliffhanger.

I kind of understand, I guess. There's a few things I don't care if I'm spoiled for, but for the rest I definitely prefer going in knowing as little about the thing I'm going to read/play/watch. I feel like my first run of it will be rawer that way, and I'll have little to no expectations other than what the media makes for itself.

I'm not going to throw a fit about it if I am spoiled, especially if I'm on a place like fs, ontd, review blogs, or other fandom discussion spots. Fic, even. I appreciate the spoiler warning, and I love the courtesy, but I know I'm not entitled to it.

Also, I disagree with the last bit of your secret. I think it's a sign of weak writing if the show or whatever is dependent on twists surprising people to hold it up (which in turn make all the plot holes or oddities crazy apparent on a rewatch). But people wanting to react to developments as they happen in-show first isn't a sign of lack of enjoyment. That's like the exact opposite, yo.
