(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)I share your feelings on spoilers. They really don't take anything from the story, for me, because when I'm reading a story, the point is how this writer is telling it. Not "what's going to happen." I may have gotten this point of view from loving classical literature as a kid, because seriously ... you go into most of those books knowing most of the major plot points. No one on earth is going to think to not tell an eleven year old about the ending to Romeo and Juliet, on the grounds that maybe they haven't read it yet. And want to. So suspense is an optional feature for me and I can splash around in any fandom to my heart's content, without worrying about what I find. On the contrary, when I read a plot I really like the sound of, on TVtropes or wherever, often that convinces me to go track down the canon for it. Because I want to experience that, in all its original-source glory. I guess it's just a different way of interacting with fiction.
I will say that, although not wanting to see spoilers seems like a strong preference that's difficult to accommodate, I respect it. I don't think it's fair to question whether someone else cares about a story because they interact with it in a different way. I do sympathize with getting tired of watching people pitch fits over something that doesn't bother you in the slightest, though. I try to warn for all my spoilers, but I also stay away from fans that will go on at length on their blogs about how horribly ruined something was, because they heard X. So I guess ... I understand the spirit behind what you posted, but I also understand why a lot of the people who responded to you are feeling like you invalidated them, personally.
