I actually...don't understand this at all. If there's absolutely no hope for your OTP to become canon, why would you ever want to destroy the pleasure of people who ship a conflicting canon couples by breaking them up and ruining the ship for a whole lot of other fans -- just so you don't have to go through the process of writing a breakup scene or slightly AU-ifying your doomed OTP's fic? I understand it if you think the couple actually has a prayer of being canon, but if it doesn't...why? Why on earth would you want to do that?
I agree that it's really irritating that m/m couples never become canon, but I've seen this attitude with people who ship obscure het couples who will never become canon, and it completely, utterly baffles me. Unless you would've disliked the pairing in question even completely separate from the fact that it conflicts with your OTP (because you think the characters are terrible together/it's problematic/etc), but wanting to break up a perfectly fine canon couple that lots of people ship even though the endgame for that scenario is "both characters are alone and less happy than they used to be, all their fans are pissed, and your OTP is still not canon and not going to be canon"? I just...I don't understand why anyone would wish for that.

And it's shipping; if one really loves a couple, how fun is it to see one or both of them involved with someone else?

Actually, I do this as well; I thought S/U was a terrible idea for several reasons.

If you think S/U is a bad couple all on its own, then yes THAT's a good reason to want them to break up in canon, but you didn't mention that in your comment so I didn't know.

But yeah, I prefer the characters I like to pair up being uninvolved in canon if they can't be with each other even if other people ship them with their current canon love interest. I don't even think it's that horrible to feel this way!
I had problems with how S/U was executed (timing, Spock's characterisation, how Uhura's screentime was used), but I don't see any inherent problems with the pairing aside from that. Aside from it not being the one I want, of course...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)maybe you already answered you own question here or maybe some slash fans are just a bit insecure and they think that if the writers don't destroy the canon couple people won't take their fanon slash couple seriously. It's not like we ever got a valid canon alternative to slash for those characters, so it even make sense if you think about it that fans may be scared that the het pair will get more popular.
Though, I don't think that some fans (possibly the majority of trek fans that worship the K/S friendship) will take slash seriously anyway, regardless if S/U or any other couple is made or break up.
