Me too! One of me and my friends' favorite past-times is standing around at conventions and making fun of people. It's hash, but true. The way I see it, if you're overweight and trying to wear the costume of someone who ISN'T, you kinda get what's coming. You put yourself out there, in a costume, you're sort of walking onto a stage and you WILL be judged.

If I can diet for a month to drop 15 pounds, hit the gym 5x a week, just to try to look the part of my character (as well as have an amazing costume), you can too. No excuses!

Metabolism, access to gym equipment, safe neighborhoods to jog in, physical disabilities resulting in limited mobility, people like you standing around mocking those fatties who dare to step outside their door.... Yeah, it's sooo easy to drop into a size nothing for cosplay! I don't know why everyone doesn't do it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not the above anon (I don't do that cosplay crap). But don't get all the excuses "can't exercise OR eat healthy". I live in effing Detroit so I know what it's like to not have access to fresh foods, gyms, safe neighborhoods to run around in. But seriously? If you want to lose the wieght (barring physical disabilites) you can lose the weight. I use to exercise by doing step areobics on the actual stairs for forty minutes day. Now I splurged and bought an eliptical and use that everyday too (only 300 bucks used, not bad). And I eat what I want as long as 75% of it is fruits and vegetables, even if they're just dried/frozen. The other 25% is starches, sweets and snacks so I don't deprieve myself.

So unless you actually can't move around too much, there is no excuse.

Yes, that would be what "limited mobility" means.

Prison Workout!

I was in the best shape of my life when I was so broke I couldn't afford to buy any treats. I lived off brown rice, beans, tofu, and splurged to get veggies. [/and ran uphill both ways in the snow, you kids today]

The point isn't that people can't do it, the point is that mocking them makes you an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who you intended to reply to but I can only assume it was someone else, because I was not the one mocking people.

I was using 'you' in the general sense - not you specifically.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you cosplay as someone that DOESN'T have a handicap, when you do? I still don't understand this argument.

Same reason people cosplay any superhero when they don't actually have any super powers themselves. Sometimes it's fun to pretend, even if you can't actually fly/climb walls/turn invisible/stand by yourself/whatever.

I think the best one we ever came up with was when we saw this GIANT Yuna from FFX. Her backboobs were bigger than her real boobs. My buddy goes, "She should summon weight watchers" and I nearly peed myself.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I believe yo-yo dieting is worse for your health than never dropping the weight at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is so true. My best friend lost 80 pounds and kept it off because she gradually lost the weight in a matter of years. She mainly wanted to for her health. But also because she loves cosplaying athletically toned girls and wanted to be able to kick some ass.

But yeah, fast extreme dieting is very stressful for your body. And if you push it too far, you might go into "starvation mode", which basically means "once you stop dieting and extreme exercising, your body is going to store all that fat you tried to keep off in order to make up for it". That's why a lot of people always gain back the weight they lose.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS, so much. The faster you lose weight, the faster you'll gain it back the second you stop whatever "extreme" diet you started. Slow and steady weight loss is key. It takes longer, but it will be worth it because it won't come flooding back the second you decide to eat some oreos.

Get a life.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
So you're laughing at people who just want to have fun and not look EXACTLY like the character they're cosplaying?

Classy.

"If I can diet for a month to drop 15 pounds, hit the gym 5x a week, just to try to look the part of my character (as well as have an amazing costume), you can too. No excuses!"

I lost over 50lbs in 2 months due to an emergency hospital visit and chronic sickness (after having surgery and a few procedures). I rapidly gained the weight because of an undiagnosed illness, stress from some very sudden events in my life, and depression.

I have kept it off since but...I can never get rid of my stretchmarks or the dark, keloid surgery scars.

"And they fade with time; once they've gone silver you can only see them up close"
I have naturally tan skin so mine tend to be a lot more noticeable. They're also the kind that make hollow grooves, so even if they're faded you can still see the deformation left behind. My old ones from puberty are still noticeable. I have bad genes I guess. I also have a hormonal issue so that probably has something to do with it.

"I'm sure scars also fade to a degree."
They're keloid though :( Only the darkness will probably fade.

"If you're really conscious of it and you want to go all slave Leia or something you might be able to just put makeup over it."
Nah. As some of the other commenters said, If I'm going up on a stage I should expect to be judged. I'd prefer going as more modestly dressed characters now. I'm going as Yukiko Amagi (all covered up) and Bayonetta (only the back and upper chest shows) next year. My slave Leia days are over (at the ripe age of 23 -___- ).

Uh, too bad everyone's body is different and the same diet/exercise regime doesn't work with everyone?

Under-eating and over-working out can actually cause extreme weight GAIN with some people. If someone truly wants to lose weight, they need to try to talk to a family doctor or nutritionist and figure out what works best for them. You can't just tell someone "oh do this and lose weight, it's so easy, stop being such a lazy fat loser." It's not going to help their situation, no matter how "nice" you're trying to be, and will probably just make them feel worse.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, why do I always see people pull out excuse after excuse when it comes to weight loss?

The vast majority of people KNOW how to lose weight; eat lots of veggies and do some exercise. It doesn't have to be a crazy diet, just freaking baby steps. But every time someone brings that stuff up you see like five commenters pulling out excuses of "not everyone can do that!! Some people have different body types!!" Yes, some people are different. Some people have serious medical conditions. But the vast majority of people just have bad eating habits they don't want to fix for whatever reason. That's it. So stop pulling out this "butbutbut SOME minority of people" bullshit.

I'm going to go with "because you're a rude, reductive tool who attacks strangers about their body weight."

your body ≠ other's body there are people who will do more gym hours than you have a stricker diet and still they won't drop that way.
Besides, no one has to drop weight until they look acceptable enough to be worthy of respect.
