Anybody Tabletop Role Play or LARP?

[personal profile] insolentwitch 2012-10-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm into Tabletop (D&D and White Wolf mostly) and I was wondering if anybody else played? If so, what games? Or are there any LARPers? I've only ever been to one LARP, but it was interesting. So F!S, any D20/D10 rollers out there?

Do you care about tabletop wargaming? There's quite a few games out there that're really good, many of them are new though there's something to be said for the old standbys like Warhammer 40k.

I've never done it myself, but my husband was super into Warhammer for a long time. It looks like it takes a lot of skill to build the armies.

Aside from the fact that you have to paint them, it does involve a little research to figure out which units you want/need, yeah. There's more simplified systems, of course.

I like the fact that it takes skill. I love the painting aspect, customization always fascinates me. I think the different groups are interesting, and it seems like there's a ton of ways to configure your armies.

I like the fact that none of the factions are unquestionably good guys. The Tau come close, but even their idealism is a little tainted.

Everything being shades of grey makes a game so much better. The choices always seem to mean more that way.

Never done any LARPing, but I met pretty much all my friends in my current city by way of the university RPG club. I'm currently in two games, one being 50 Fathoms, a pirate fantasy themed savage world's setting, and the other being an Apocalypse World game which is an interesting indie system set (obviously) in a post apocalyptic earth.

I've also done some white wolf (mage, vampire, scion, and a really poorly GMed exalted),a Dresden Files campaign, and a teeny bit of D&D.

Your university has an RPG Club? That is really cool. 50 Fathoms sounds interesting. Is it D20 or an indie system? I love pirates and playing pirates so I'm intrigued. I've never been in a post apocalyptic game but I've heard of a few that sound interesting.

I've been told that a bad GM can really wreck Exalted since it's so over the top to begin with. But a good DM/GM is crucial to any game. I once had a GM in D&D disregard 20 levels worth of feats because he just didn't know how to make them work in his game. He decided that my character was dangerous to the campaign he was running (rail-roading) so my character was pretty much side-lined.

I'll admit to bias towards White Wolf though, Vampire's one of the first games I played so I'll always have a soft spot for the WoD.

AYRT: well, I'm not at the University in question any more, but I agree on the coolness-RPGs are also fantastic way to meet the social nerds! After all, you need to talk to at least a couple of other people to play tabletop RPGs.

Savage worlds is its own system. They've got a pretty flexible core rules et, and then a bunch of pre written adventures and settings that address their own tweaks. I really like the system, and the pre written stuff makes it fairly easy to GM. (which, of course, I'm ignoring and choosing to run a Mage game as my first attempt at GMing once this campaign ends...) It's big on doing crazy awesome stuff without worrying too much about the details.

Good luck running Mage, it's a great game for creative minds. I think Mage is awesome for how strange things can really get. There's so much room for great games with your group.

When it's just my husband and I running characters together we take turns GMing and pretty much do away with dice unless we really need to roll for something. Basically I like flexible systems, so Savage worlds sounds good.

I do D&D with some old friends, but not that often. We played 3.5 all through high school, with a main campaign that took us from level 1 to 14 over around 4 and half years. Some people came and went, but there was a core group of six (later 7) and we did a LOT of various one-shots, mini-campaigns, and a few abandoned quests. Some of my very favorite memories from that time in my life are D&D related.

Now we're almost all out of college, some are in grad school, most of us are working, but we've just started a 4th edition campaign with a few more friends who we knew back then but weren't part of the original 3.5 games. It's harder when we have 3+ months between sessions and you have to plan gatherings over a month in advance rather than seeing each other most school days and playing D&D about every other weekend. But we're getting together over Halloween to play some more and I can't wait!

I wish you well on Halloween!

It would be tough to wait three months in between sessions. I don't have a gaming group right now, but my last one did 3.5 too. My longest running character went from levels 1 to 32, it was an epic journey. Do you like 4th Edition? I haven't played it yet and am very curious.

TL;DR alert! So far we've only had one session of new campaign, and a testing-the-water 4th edition one-shot over a year before that. Two of the players don't have as much tabletop experience as the 7 of us who played in our 3.5 days, but they get by. We've started at level 8 to get past the grueling you're-squishy-everything-kills-you phase but not yet in the "paragon" tier. I think I benefited from watching the "Robot Chicken Plays D&D" videos on youtube as it gave me a chance to see some fun 4th edition gameplay and I could see what was the same and what's different before I dove into the new campaign.

I do think the new system is more streamlined and intuitive than 3.5. There's less customization of your class abilities (at least with just the core rule book, I haven't sprung for any more beyond that yet), but the at-will/encounter/daily breakdown of exploits is I think the best thing about the change. The new defenses system definitely takes some getting used to and is the one thing that still throws me the most. And while I LOVED being a skill monkey, the compression of the skills list and the ability modifier + 1/2 level system on skill checks is definitely for the better as it means you still improve in skills you don't specialize in.

The classes are much more balanced when compared to each other. No more CoDZilla or Batman!Wizards mopping the floor with high-level fighters! For the 6 years or so we played 3.5 I was never any of the heavy martial classes because the fighter feat pileup sucked and the close combat rules confused me- I was always some combination of caster, skill monkey and/or archer. And while I'm playing a dwarf warlock now (which works surprisingly well, building off the racial CON bonus), I would feel much more comfortable playing a 4th edition fighter than a 3.5 one.

And while we haven't got there yet, the built-in opportunity when leveling up to retrain low-level exploits with higher-level ones is definitely a boon. I especially remember that if you do the long-run campaign slog from level 1, you inevitably want to revise the character's build from what you originally envisioned it as!

Robot Chicken playing D&D is something I'm going to have to find. I'd heard that the classes were a bit more balanced, the Munchkins I know were really upset about it. Thanks for all the info. This is the best information I've gotten since 4th Edition came out. Nothing beats hearing about it from another gamer. =D

I finally managed to find a D&D group over the summer (my friend and I had been meaning to for years). We were meeting once a week, but because school's started again and the DM moving it's sort of come to a halt (since school started we've been using roll20.net to play. All of us would still gather in the same room to play though, sans the DM).

I hate it when RL gets in the way of a good game *hugs* I'm going to have to go investigate roll20.net now.

I LARP and play several tabletop games (D&D 3.5, White Wolf -- classic WoD and Exalted, as well as some dabbling with Cyberpunk 2020 and BESM). I've been trying to cobble together an in-person gaming group for a while lately, since most of my usual gaming friends graduated, but I'm in a couple of chat-based online games right now: Changeling: The Dreaming and Exalted 2E.

I don't LARP, but I do table top play and DM D&D 3.5, Vampire: the Masquerade, Mage: the Ascension, Star Wars D20, and the occasional Exalted or other random thing we're going to try today. I don't get to play as often as I'd like to due to shift work, but I try to make most games.

D10 roller here!

I've been part of the same tabletop RPG group since high school. We started with D&D, but we've played just about everything: from CP2020, to L5R, to the White Wolf systems, Rifts, Paranoia, Call of Cthulu - you name it, we've probably tried it.

Right now I'm running a nuclear post-apoc game set in modern day Afghanistan with ORE's Nemesis system. It's intended for horror gaming, but it's working pretty well in the extreme environments I'm running the party through now.
