I don't blame you for being upset. I understand that it's a cultural difference, but that doesn't make it less upsetting.

Honestly, I don't believe there's ever an excuse to hit a child (except maybe in a very, very mild sense, like slapping their hand away from a hot stove). I know a lot of people do not feel like they were harmed by it, and I trust that that's true for them. But I believe it's wrong and I'll stand by that.

The fact that it's a cultural difference doesn't make it right.

I don't think it's the end of the world, either - I think children can survive it pretty well, it's not going to ruin their lives. I think, probably, that people in the Western world get a little too intense about it. But that still doesn't make it right.

I don't get the culture excuse. Sure, there are things that shouldn't be looked down upon culture wise, but then there are things that are just morally wrong that shouldn't be ignored because 'lol it's culture!' Female genital mutilation for one, the sexualization of children is another.

These are very much my feelings, down to hand-slaps being acceptable.

My dad is very proud of the fact that the only time he hit me was when I was with him in a bathroom and tried to reach into a urinal to play with the urinal cake.

Looking back with my adult knowledge and perspective, I think that was a very appropriate time for a handslap.
