If it's something like DIAF then yeah, I generally don't think people literally mean it that way. However, when somebody starts telling somebody in detail how they should go kill themselves (as happened to my partner), then it's another thing entirely. Not sure if the OP is talking specifically about "Go die" or stuff like that in general.

It is an awful thing to say, and an awful thing to hear. I have bipolar disorder and sometimes reading something like that can flip me over into suicidal depression. And then you have assholes that will tell you that if something "stupid" like that is enough to make you kill yourself, the world is better off without you. Which is just... victim-blaming, and cruel, and ableist towards people with mental illnesses. And totally misses the point that it is rarely just that one thing that tips people over the edge.
