i've always viewed "go die" comments on the internet to mean, log off and don't come back...i just don't think it's the same as telling someone to die to their face

but overall, i agree with you and think it's an AWFUL thing to say

Perhaps many mean that, but...I'm seen some who literally wish the person would die. One of them was actually on this very site not that long ago. It was incredibly distressing to read.

A lot of people might mean it that way. But I've seen a lot of people say "Go kill yourself", which is really messed up but is very clear in meaning.

If it's something like DIAF then yeah, I generally don't think people literally mean it that way. However, when somebody starts telling somebody in detail how they should go kill themselves (as happened to my partner), then it's another thing entirely. Not sure if the OP is talking specifically about "Go die" or stuff like that in general.

It is an awful thing to say, and an awful thing to hear. I have bipolar disorder and sometimes reading something like that can flip me over into suicidal depression. And then you have assholes that will tell you that if something "stupid" like that is enough to make you kill yourself, the world is better off without you. Which is just... victim-blaming, and cruel, and ableist towards people with mental illnesses. And totally misses the point that it is rarely just that one thing that tips people over the edge.
