It's the internet. It's easier to be an awful, inhumane person to someone when you know they are on the other side of the world and they can't reach you physically through the computer. Because if that same person who told that other person to "Die already" were in real life face to face, it's good bet they wouldn't say the same thing.

i've always found it to be a pointless line when flung my way. depression keeps me thinking such things to myself, doesn't hurt any to hear them from a stranger lol.

Actually, that's another thing!

i've always viewed "go die" comments on the internet to mean, log off and don't come back...i just don't think it's the same as telling someone to die to their face

but overall, i agree with you and think it's an AWFUL thing to say

i try my best to refrain from insults that low (with the exception of joking with friends, because that's just how we do), both on internet and offline. i guess i just see it like this: if someone i'd never met before told me to go die, it wouldn't really affect me, because who the fuck is this guy anyway. if it was someone i quietly admired, looked up to, or cared about, that would be kind of devastating.
and given the nature of the internet, you never know who's looking up to you, and who you could be emotionally crushing with such vicious insults

in summary: shit's fucked up.

[personal profile] nynaeve_sedai 2012-10-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, it's one of those things I see on the internet. I'm always amazed at how some of my RL friends, who have different viewpoints than me, will say horrendous, awful things about another person... and then when I point out that *I* have that view, they spend their time backpedaling because they don't mean *me*, of course.

Maybe I'm weird, but I have a policy, I don't say anything on the internet that I wouldn't say to someone's face. I'm pretty damn blunt too.

But I also try to remember that even if I hate the other person's opinion (this is going beyond the fandom thing now...) - they're still a human being, even if they can't remember that I am too.

I always hope that when someone is so careless with their words about something so insignificant (dude, it's *entertainment*), that there's someone else to come to their defense so the person doesn't feel alone.

:(

I remember a few years ago when DIAF seemed to be pretty common in Internet arguments and even I started throwing it around casually. I'm not proud of it. It never occurred to me it might upset someone, even though I too have struggled with things enough to have my mind go to some pretty dark places. Well, one day I upset someone - not even the person it was aimed at, and got a strong talking to and it made me think. I know variations of "go die" isn't (usually) meant literally but that experience made me think twice about using those expressions so I don't say them anymore.

Yeah, I hate it when people say that. It's pretty screwed up. I can say some pretty harsh things when I'm upset, but I don't think I'd ever wish someone's death or tell them to kill themselves.

what I hate the most is when people say it, and then when they get called out on it they seem 100% serious, because they think the world would be better off without those people. Those get to me the most.

Agree with this. Call me conservative, but I think saying "go fuck off and die" is a low blow to anybody.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda flinch at that phrase because ages ago on a forum I used there was another user who really had it in for me. I mean, it became obvious she was being completely serious when she said she wished I would fuck off and die because the world would be a better place without me. I pointed out to her that I was genuinely going through some stuff and it wasn't appropriate for her to say that. So she told me to go and get it over with then because I "deserved" to die. Worse still a friend defended her saying she has her own problems and I should've stopped being so sensitive.

Yeah...I'm not his friend anymore. And I find "go die" totally lacking in class because of how it made me feel being the target of someone's months-long "go fucking die" hate campaign.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
... am I the only one a little struck by the ... specificity of the examples?

In two out of three cases, the person being told to "die," at least if I'm reading it correctly, is being told to die specifically because they aren't joining on some social-justice cause. While I've run into enough SJWs to believe that some will without irony instruct people "go die because you don't care enough about things that really matter!" it seems strange to depict it in two of the three examples.

The sad thing is that DIAF and other such phrases used to only be used by trolls and 12 year olds, but these days it seems to be very commonly to wish death or harm upon people who don't share the same view as the person saying it.

Ironically, a lot of these people claim to be against the death penalty... unless you disagree with their beliefs, then you can DIAF.

It's the social justice warriors.

No, seriously, it is.

That woman (Riley I think her name is?) with Arkh Project has made a career out of screaming invective at anyone and everyone who says something that mildly annoys her, and her friend genderbitch likes to threaten to beat people to death if they say something s/he dislikes. It's gotten to the point where you can say something as innocuous as "I prefer X to Y," with X and Y being something as stupid as type of takeout, and these wastes of carbon go from 0 to 10 in a couple nanoseconds. They've gotten to the point where they post people's personal information (in one case social security number) online over a stupid Internet argument.

It's kind of... well, no, it's not kind of. It's absolutely bugfuck crazy. And it's just going to get worse, because the more rabid the SJWs get, the more rabid the opposition is going to get, and the rabidness (is that a word?) spreads to the general Internet using population. It's like it was a few years ago with 4chan memes spreading like wildfire, or herpes.

While I do agree telling people to die is wrong it's not new. It's not only thrown at minority groups. Generally on the internet it doesn't mean anything but "I don't like you and/or your opinion but I can't really do anything about it."

Time and time again it gets a reaction out of people and it's the reaction the commenter wanted.

Oh trust me, it is nothing new. Some people don't just say it, they actually draw the targets of their hatred getting maimed or killed. Granted, usually it's not a specific person but rather just a generic member of their hated target (furries, weeaboos, Zutara shippers, etc.), and the "artist" is probably just an Internet Tough Guy and not a real psychopath, but it's still a bit disturbing when you think someone actually took the time to draw that.

Of course we all get irritated by certain people. Of course we will think of nasty things happening to those people. That doesn't mean you have to say them out loud. Or type them publicly. If I really do have some evil thoughts I wanna get off my chest, I put them in a private journal entry. Simple as that. No need to start more trouble.

I think anyone who takes these kinds of "go die" insults/attacks/put-downs any more seriously than any other insult on the internet needs to grow some fucking perspective and get over it. It's infantile to assign some kind of magical ~meaning~ to casual death-based insults. It's like saying it's okay to call someone a meanie old doodie-head but it's TOTALLY NOT OKAY EVER to call them a cocksucking motherfucker asshole.

They're just words. And none of them are true. And EVERYONE knows that none of them are true. Y'all need to graduate from kindergarten here.
