It's the internet. It's easier to be an awful, inhumane person to someone when you know they are on the other side of the world and they can't reach you physically through the computer. Because if that same person who told that other person to "Die already" were in real life face to face, it's good bet they wouldn't say the same thing.

Am I really the only one who is politer and nicer on the Internet than I am in real life?

(All of you slightly scare me, which might explain why)

I am pretty much the same online as I am offline, which is polite and nice for the most part. (Everyone once in while I will fall for a troll...)

Dammit I need to use a Norwegian expression, I'll just translate it: understand me wrongly, it's not that I'm not nice in real life, I'm just nicer (for the most part) on the Internet, I'm more likely to use enddarements and ask people how they are doing or wish them luck than I'm in real life, I'm also a lot more understanding when I discuss stuff with people online, in real life I'm a lot more blunt in my opinion and so on...

The equivalent English expression would probably be "don't get me wrong". /butts out

But I didn't want to use the English one, I wanted to use the Norwegian one! It fit perfectly, except when I translated it. *stomps feet*

In all seriousness though, yeah that was the expression I needed, so thanks!

Which is generally the problem with expressions [and generally why it's easier to just use the expressions that are already in the language. /lazy]

No, not really. I'm the same way. I'm much nicer online, for some reason. (Also RP account, sorry about that.)

[personal profile] making_excuses 2012-10-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm nicer for two reasons, I know how much any kind of response I get on the Internet affects me (good and bad) and I assume other people think like me, and the other much bigger reason is because people online scare me, I don't know what you could do to me... (Which makes no sense because I met my now ex online and he wasn't scary or dangerous at all, in the end he did turn out to be a cheating bastard, but that is a completely different story)

(I'm tired so forgive me, but I assume you reply as yourself, not your RP character, right?)

Yup, I am replying as me. I just thought I'd say cause some people are weird about that.

And to me, for some reason, I seem to be more sensitive to what I'm told online than actually IRL. I'm not sure it makes any sort of sense, though. I'm not sure if anyone else actually feels the same way, but things online can make me anxious in a way real life seldom does.

People are? I don't RP or really involve myself in fandom except F!S, so I wouldn't know...

I'm the same way, actually so YANA.

I'm the same way, and I've never quite been able to figure out why.

tw for talk about harassment, including sexual

Well, for me, it's in part hearing all the horror stories about online stalkers and how prevalent they are. I know several people who have dealt with an online stalker that made their online life hell, and because it was only online, cops didn't take it seriously. Hell, for one friend, cops didn't take it seriously when he started sending threats to her personal address because he hadn't "actually done anything."

If it doesn't go to the realm of actual sexual harassment, it is even more impossible to get help from authorities. It is not taken anywhere near as seriously as it should be.

So for me I end up thinking of worst case scenarios. Thank you, anxiety disorder. *sigh*

Me too, I thought I was alone in that!

I'm sort of better about being polite than I am IRL. I'm really hot-tempered and emotional, so online I have an easier time sitting and thinking before I respond, instead of getting defensive and going into ATTACK MODE. (I lash out when I'm frightened, which is...often.)

That being said, I'm still too defensive and emotional even online. I really hate myself when I'm like that. >>;

I wouldn't say I'm nicer, but am more careful about what I say which may at least make it seem that way. It's nice to be able to really think about the response you want to make and maybe do a bit a research before you reply.

I AM MYSELF

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I am exactly the same here as in real life. Too loud, too opinionated, offending everyone left and right. I've only told one person to go die, and that was in real life, not the internet.

I like to think I've matured since then, and I try really hard to pay attention to when I've been a huge asshat. In the old days, when I realized how big a dick I was being, it would just make me meaner, because then I was mad at myself AND someone else. Now, when I realize I'm being douchey, I try to back down and apologize. Sometimes, though, I still mess up and just increase in assholishness until it's a clusterfuck of offensiveness and pisses off everyone involved.

I tend to write way too long entries, and if you ever spoke too me you'd realize I'm exactly the same way in real life, my username is what it is for a reason...

The important thing is to be aware of ones shortcomings in life (or so I've been told) and try to be the best oneself one can be...

For fucks sake I sound like a greeting card. How did people allow me to become an adult and live on my own?

They put those messages in greeting cards for a reason; they reach people and are generally universally good advice/sentiments/etc. Obviously at this point they are relatively cheesy and trite, but only because the sentiments have been "repeated" so much.

What I'm trying to say is I agree with you, and even if you do sound like a greeting card, at least you sound like a good one.

You raise a pretty valid point.

That is because I'm cool (I always imagine myself saying that like Jon Richardson for some reason).

Sometimes I try to imagine a time when greeting card sayings actually were new and original. It seems like a nice time to be.
