I've been on Tumblr a little over 3 years and know how to use it, but I still don't like it. I finally realized that it isn't the platform, it's the people. LJ fandom life was mostly welcoming and it was easy to get to know people and bond with them. Tumblr makes it a bit more difficult and the majority of people in the fandoms I'm in are assholes. Those same fandoms have wonderful people on LJ. There are a few people like me who have accounts in both places but we all, save one, primarily stick to LJ. The one who sticks mostly to Tumblr is the fandom wanker no one on LJ likes. She has some close friends on Tumblr and they have a game, complete with a points system, for hounding people out of the fandom. It's disturbing to see.

I think a lot of it has to do with age; LJ attracts a much older clientele than Tumblr. In my fandoms, the Tumblr users are 14-22 and on LJ they're 25-50. I can relate better to the second group and am baffled by a lot of the things said by younger fans, so I don't participate on Tumblr. I don't care what their mom said about what they wore to school that day or how much homework they have to do. I just check the tags for my fandoms and a few specific blogs and then head back to LJ.
