I feel ya.

I've been in fandom since I was twelve and things just aren't what they used to be for me.

I think you are being a bit too hasty with the "I'll never be in fandom again." You have a lot more life ahead of you. Decades. And your tastes in things aren't going to change that dramatically.

You are burned out of fandom now (and that's normal) so you give it a break for a couple of years. Then, one day, you'll see a new show or read a new book or watch a new movie that gets your imagination jumping, and you'll remember "hey fandom!" Then, bang, like that, you are back in again.

So don't feel too sad about it. Go refresh yourself doing something else. Fandom isn't going anywhere.

This. I fell out of fandom for a while around 19-22, now I'm getting back in it again. You may just not be interested right now, so just take a break and come back whenever you're ready. :)

I came here to say exactly this. Interests change and change and change again. You never know what you'll be into five or ten or twenty years down the line.

I've found that fandom has cycles, really. I have periods where I get burnt out--either on certain fandoms, certain types of fandoms, certain parts of fandom, or just fandom in general--but after I take some time to step away and get a bit of distance, there's usually something to draw me back in. There's nothing wrong with "growing out" of fandom, either, but it's not necessarily inevitable.

I'm in denial over the whole LJ moving to tumblr thing. I can't REALLY get into it the way I used to, and it bothers me. I miss the discussion and interaction that was so much easier on LJ (and DW to some degree).

I can't really see myself "growing out of" fandom, though. The way I interact with fandom is changing, but I still find myself getting excited over shows, talking about it with friends, playing games with friends, etc. I'm just less into the internet side of things and more into sharing it with IRL friends.

Tumblr is great for pictures and gifs and shit for actual discussion. I'm hoping that either DW will catch on more for fandom activities, or something new will pop up (or that LJ will stop making stupid decisions, but that's a shot in the dark).

Well, you'll probably find your literary tastes shifting, and now the crappy Mary-Sues and badly written slash that you loved at 13 is now just painful to read, and you find all the younger fans to be a bit silly at times, and the older fans are sometimes a bit obsessed. Also, you have more responsibilities, and so less time for such things.

However, that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy fandom, you just spend less time in it and be more discerning about what you participate in. There's still lots of good stuff in it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i pretty much felt like this in my early 20's too, and took a break from most fandom stuff for a couple of years. but this year i fell back into fandom in a big way because of a few great fun series. it's not unusual to have changing tastes in hobbies so i hope you don't stress it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate tumblr. I hope it's a flash in the pan and people start to go back to a system that lets people carry on conversations properly in comment threads, not by reblogging shitty picspams.

Maybe you'll drift back eventually. I know what you mean though. I'm not quite as excited and full of wonder about fandom as I was at 17- but eventually I found my way back and while it's not the same, I've found other ways to participate.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of felt like this through a majority of my late teens and through until I turned 21, but mostly that was because I was so focused on ONE FANDOM, that when I got out I was like "I'm good. Done. Don't need it."

And then after a while I found new things to get excited about, and now I just have a few toes in a ton of different fandom pools. I don't want to get so involved in one that I miss out on fun things in another.

Don't write it off as "Never again" yet. You can be shallowly invested in a lot of things and have just as much fun as being deeply invested in one.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I felt a few months ago. Then I embraced tumblr.

It's a new era.

I sort of had the opposite experience. My fandom interest lessened somewhat when I was 15-ish, and then I got into fandom majorly when I was 19, and started participating a lot more than I did when I was younger.

You don't know. Maybe your interests have changed, and that's fine. Or maybe you're burned out at the moment. Either way, I don't think it's a matter of getting too old for fandom. A lot of adults love fandom. Sometimes our interests just change and we move on.

I must say I agree. I love Tumblr and all, but the mass migration makes me sad in some ways.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for the people that don't see all the good meta and stuff on tumblr. There's tons of it. You just have to you know follow the right people and the right fuckyeah blog. Just like on lj where you had to have the right people friended and follow the right comms. Nothing has changed. You just don't know how to find what you want now and instead of learning you bitch. Instead of remembering how lj took time to learn the ins and outs of you expect to be able to jump right in. Guess what? Life and fandom isn't that easy.

This is the exact same thing that happened with things moved from the mailing lists to tumblr. Just relax. Nothing is being killed or 'damaged' any more than it was then.

Gah, tumblr. It's nearly impossible to have a decent conversation there, and I hate having to spam the same thing by reblogging it again and again just to add a few words of conversation. I would love it to death if it had a comment system because fannish stuff is ridiculously easy to spread there, but communication? Meh. Impossible.

Your 22-year-old ennui is amusing, OP.

Here's an interesting article on the demise of LJ: http://www.dailydot.com/culture/livejournal-decline-timeline/

I've been on Tumblr a little over 3 years and know how to use it, but I still don't like it. I finally realized that it isn't the platform, it's the people. LJ fandom life was mostly welcoming and it was easy to get to know people and bond with them. Tumblr makes it a bit more difficult and the majority of people in the fandoms I'm in are assholes. Those same fandoms have wonderful people on LJ. There are a few people like me who have accounts in both places but we all, save one, primarily stick to LJ. The one who sticks mostly to Tumblr is the fandom wanker no one on LJ likes. She has some close friends on Tumblr and they have a game, complete with a points system, for hounding people out of the fandom. It's disturbing to see.

I think a lot of it has to do with age; LJ attracts a much older clientele than Tumblr. In my fandoms, the Tumblr users are 14-22 and on LJ they're 25-50. I can relate better to the second group and am baffled by a lot of the things said by younger fans, so I don't participate on Tumblr. I don't care what their mom said about what they wore to school that day or how much homework they have to do. I just check the tags for my fandoms and a few specific blogs and then head back to LJ.
